Sorry guys, I ran out of time tonight. Tomorrow I should manage.

T4 - Recall all our elvish heroes, and play defensively; don't even take attacks in some places. That turned out to be a very good idea! IBT they hit our line head on and do a ton of damage. They also manage to flank us in the south and kill an avenger and white mage frown. Looks like the new guys are headed south.

Also the grand knights and pally up north get themselves surrounded, probably going to die up here distacting the orcs.

T5 - more backing up of our line. The healers are busy! Only the dwarves seem to be able to stay on the front line for more than a turn. Still, we kill a few of the enemy, and regain control of the southern flank.

We're essentially done recalling, although I'm tempted to grab the mermen just because they're lvl 3 wink. I fill out the rest of the fort with some dwarvish guardsmen; I doubt any of the others would survive a round of combat here anyway.

IBT - We lose the assassin and an archmage, in addition to the northern grand knights frown. Just when I thought we'd make it through a round without casualties, too - they managed to break our line with those skirmisher duellists.

Now the northern end of our line is the weak spot!

T6 - More dwarvish guardsmen. I try to shore up the north, and take what free potshots I get.

IBT - They kill Kalenz, with the last hit from the last troop who could reach him, who could only reach him because he killed one first. Uhh...I guess I'll start over, trying to be even more cautious? It's frustrating, it seemed like the tide was turning by then, too!

In any case, I'm a little frustrated, not going to try again until tonight at the earliest.

Ok, trying again. Goal this time is survival above all - I'm going to be extra cautious with anyone and everyone. That wounded whateveritis can always wait another turn to die, so long as I don't expose any of our troops.

T4 - this time I spend the turn just moving everyone into a defensive line. Pull the northern grand knights back, anyone who's injured even slightly next to a healer, etc. I kill a couple foes who can't hit back with ranged attacks, but the focus here is survival.

Still recruit a full keep of elvish heroes, they're a good unit for night fighting.

IBT - That worked a bit better. Although despite my paranoia we still lose the avenger on the end of the line, everyone else comes through. Now to see if I can manage to get the wounded warriors off the front!

T5 - Use the mages to clean up the backfield. Everyone else shuffles positions to get maximum health on the frontlines. I perform the occasional attack, but mostly I want to keep the battle slow enough that our healers can keep up.

We finally manage to get a seal - we actually have a backfield now that units can go to for safety.

IBT - we lose a gryphon and avenger, but all in all the turn passes pretty well for us. Several units go down to single digit hp, after all.

And the enemy units on the line are starting to look awfully beat up.

T6 - pull back again in the north, so that we can get our new dwarvish stalwarts into the line in place of our wounded better guys. In the south, we manage to actually stand fast with just some rotation, and kill a few weaker units with our magic.

We finally outnumber the foe, at 39 (us) to 35 (them). The tide might be shifting finally.

IBT - we lose a grand knight. But that's all.

As dawn breaks, we've survived the night, and managed a lot of killing on the foes. You'll need to rearrange the lines again in the south, possibly by retreating a few hexes; the dwarvish lord and stalwart who've held the corners are looking pretty bad, and the healers have gotten pushed together so they can't heal as many units.

On the other hand, you're likely to be able to finally push forward in the north; that has mainly wounded units and orcs, in daylight. If you can do that, you might well break their line.

Still, I expect the next turnset to need to be about as careful as I was; we've 4 healers that keep busy, and it's still not enough to quite keep up. But the enemy mostly doesn't bother to heal, and when they do, it's just a pair of villages. So if we keep the battle at a simmer, only taking damage on their turn, things work much better for us.

Ouch. Sounds like a very tough loss, Mardoc. alright

This level is extremely tough, as the enemy just slams into our line with huge numbers of high-level units. When I played this one solo, I stayed very defensive and did not send anyone forward. Hold everyone back in a solid formation, fill in spots with dwarven guardsmen wherever you need someone expendable (e.g. all corners), keep the required heroes carefully protected, etc. There will be losses, a lot of losses, but once the initial storm passes you can start fighting back. Eventually the path to the queen will be clear.

I am getting caught up on work and other stuff, so I think I can go back into the rotation and take the turnset after Fire&Ice. Or the equivalent spot, if he is not currently available -- seems like a lot of the team is busy at the moment. smile

OK, crosspost with Mardoc's second report: Tough fighting, but sounds like a good job. I don't like the look of our salient, though -- we should probably shorten our lines by pulling units back. Daylight will be tough with the various lawful units on our southern flank, although we should do well against the orcs in the north.

Now I understand better how those develop in real life. I didn't intend a salient, but that's the part of the line that was able to hold while everyone else had to pull back.

But yes, that section of the line is getting pretty beat up now; if we pull back to shrink it, that'll let a lot of the wounded units heal. And if we spread the light mages and shyde out, then we can actually heal them all. Say, pull back until the line is straight again, a line from the grand knight to the archmage as the new front line (although both of them should probably be replaced, they're not good corner units). That could be held by just 4 units; and 4 healthy units are fairly easy to find.

I'm expecting that we'll have to continue to be very defensive in the south during the day, but might manage to break the orcs in the north; that would let us focus down the southern humans in the following night.

Edit: Oh, yeah! Welcome back, haphazard1!. I'm glad your schedule is freeing up enough that you can slip in some gaming again.

Isn't Jkean up now or did I miss him having somthing come up.

The major difference I see here between my solo play (about 1 year ago) and now is that I bought knights and said if they kill 1 unit its a good thing.

I basicly said its the last senerio lets charge that line and flatten them.
It worked I never had any problems keep my leaders alive.

Bascially I compressed the salient as soon as I could and sacrificed guardsmen as needed to keep them off the important members of th army.

Once their line was thinned out it fell pretty quickly.

Wow, that was a lot faster progress than I expected, especially for only costing us a Lord, Avenger, and throwaway guardsmen! thumbsup

fire&ice, take us home! It looks like all that's really left is walking up to Asheviere and delivering the deathblow.
