I'd guess his resolution was to not get worked up about things people post on the internet.

It is possible that Sulla has been sending or receiving PMs that have more to do with it than what is being posted in the tech thread. But this doesn't surprise me at all after Thoth posted.

Sullla Wrote:There's another issue I have to mention while I have a minute here. Some people may have noticed that I've been posting significantly less at Realms Beyond in recent months. I find myself posting less, having less interest in reading threads, and less interest in discussing things with the community. I've been increasingly more dissatisfied with the tone of many of the threads here. Quite frequently, I've put in some effort to write something interesting for discussion or explanation, only to find the responding posts full of nitpicking trivial details, making snarky comments, or otherwise taking some sort of veiled potshot. While I expect that sort of crap on the Internet, I don't expect to see it at Realms Beyond, and I've been very disappointed to see what feels like actual trolling popping up on these forums. If posters want to act like idiots, that's perfectly fine, but I won't bother to put in time and effort to write posts like the above one.
Now, since this is the new year, instead of trying to cast blame, let's approach things in a more positive light. I have no intention of naming names or calling anyone out here. I want to ask anyone reading this to think about encouraging more positive discussion this year, so that we can get these forums back to the place that they've traditionally been. Instead of nitpicking a trivial detail, think about responding with a thoughtful comment instead. Debate and discussion are the lifeblood of a community - I don't expect everyone to agree with me all the time, nor would I want them to. What I do expect is for all of us to have a civil tone to our discussions, and avoid making personal attacks. If we can all do that, this will be a great community for many years yet to come.

If you read his thread you can see the resolution he posted. Basically he was just hoping for more positivity and less arguing all around. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't think that's what he was referring to. That's a request for other people to do something, not a resolution.

Sullla has quit RB at least once before, which lasted about three weeks. He won't be able to resist writing about this game the next time he pulls together a grand plan. We haven't seen the last of him. And there's no way in literally Hell that he won't be around for Diablo III.
There won't be anything I can say to cheer him up, he doesn't listen to me any more than anyone else. I will make sure to take an active hand in regularly reading this game and moderating the forum when needed.

I read it as a pledge to keep the tone civil, with a challenge for others do the same. I suspect from his perspective locking the thread was in that spirit, although it had the opposite effect. Predictable result if you know Thoth . In fact that might be why this spiraled out of control so quickly. A lot of the things Thoth posted in the UN thread could be interpreted as rude, but really its just his brand of humor.

That's a good point. Degree of familiarity with Thoth's style accounts for the vast disparity of response to his thread and followup posts.

When were people ever "nitpicking" stuff he posted in his thread, anyway? Most of the non-team comments there are from worshipful sycophants. Who he has now decided to deprive of his incredible insight
Assuming he hasn't been reading this thread, where the vast majority of critical & rude posts have been made (like this one!), it's a shame that Thoth was enough to make Sulla abandon RB. Again. I agree that Thoth was over-the-line rude, but it didn't really surprise me because... it's Thoth. He gets drunk, posts youtube links, is outspoken in his enjoyment of boobs, has very little mind-to-keys filter, and plays really well. I don't mind him at all, but I can see why Sulla would get upset if he hasn't read any of Thoth's posts elsewhere, or isn't used to people being abrasive on the internet.

I hope you aren't referring to my post. I think both sides are acting childish, but I'm not going to dumb kerosene on top of a fire by telling Sullla to act responsibly in his own thread. That will accomplish a lot, I'm sure. Besides, I've already had my moment in the sun acting exactly in this way (pbem23); how hypocritical would it be for me to go into someone else's thread and demand the same?
So I did what felt best: I wished him well and tried to remind him of the good things he's helped contribute to RB. Hopefully he'll take some time away and change his mind and we'll see him back later on.
