Well, this turn was interesting. We got enough espionage on Team Googly to see their research for the first time. And they're teching... Meditation?
I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking, "what thing f---ing f---?". This seems to be a terrible idea on their part for a number of reasons:
- Early Mysticism is not needed, because they are CREATIVE.
- An early religion is not needed, because they are CREATIVE.
- As far as I can tell, the only critical techs they've researched so far are Agriculture and Bronze Working. Seriously, you're going to go for Mysticism and Meditation - as a CREATIVE civ - before getting basic stuff like Animal Husbandry, The Wheel, or even Pottery?
- They're surrounded by fairly hostile neighbours who have been openly commenting on their amazing land. And yet this doesn't concern them enough to move off the religious/cultural path - as a CREATIVE civ - and tech more useful military techs?
- Even if they're going for an early Oracle (which is possible as they're the only other Industrious civ aside from us), going for Mysticism/Meditation this early is still a terrible idea. As an Industrious civ, you really want Pottery before the Oracle so that you can take Metal Casting. And the Oracle is cheap, so you can chop it out faster than you can tech. So why not research Pottery first - especially when your start has FLOOD PLAINS!
Seriously, this is all a bit mind boggling. I can't think of any logical reason aside from poor play for them going this route.
Oh well, their loss.
No-one tell them anything!
All of a sudden I'm actually a little hopeful about our chances. If Team Googly is apparently intent on playing this badly, we might have a shot in this game after all. As far as I can tell they haven't even got Animal Husbandry, in which case they wouldn't know that we have Horses at our capital despite them revealing the tile they're located on. And if they follow with their current tech path then they won't reveal Horses for at least 15-20 more turns.
I wouldn't say this changes things enough to give us a particularly good chance - they still have Copper where we don't, and overall we're still pretty screwed in this game. But at least this gives us a little ray of hope. If they do indeed get Buddhism, a holy city would certainly be a nice little bonus for us when rolling over their territory.
