[SPOILERS] PB7: Winning The Hard Way - Mao Plays Craps

Commodore Wrote:Adding one last thing: I do still expect us to lose. Neither Seven nor Mack has lost a game that didn't contain the other one. This is some gnarly oposition, and Plako's interest aside, even us winning the massive longshot of killing them will probably only help Sunrise, LP, The 3, or Pindicator.
Was Seven in pitboss 4? Mack didn't win that one.

Seven hasn't lost a game, period. He's not won 11 (aborted) and 23 (drawn.)

mackoti's lone loss to date is PB4. He's also not won 23.

I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

Coupla notes. Firstly, Brave Sir Chariots ran away. We have an awesome force that needs to press forward to hit Azza's ex-capital, with possibly a chance of splitting off chariots for the stone but probably ought to let it die on the vine. One whipped-in bugger will show up next turn, but that's fine. Also, the barb might give a spear a second promo.

We need to hustle back to make a road connection to Black Lotus, which needs a new casino tribe name. Also pictured: Micro notes.

Awesome Cahokia needs to whip a chariot once it hits size three...once we shake free the worker force, the rice can be improved but meanwhile, it lives for the whip.

Speaking of whips, the capital needs one. I favor 3-pop whipping a settler in two turns, but a library also would be nice.

Forward, into the maw of death! If we can get a dog/spear both promoted woodie 2 might consider trying to sever home Germany from Azzuastria.

Civstats shows three whips for team Hunter-Gatherer. I'm going to guess...unit, unit, unit. No idea of composition but possibly chariots to speed toward the battle, if they think they can make it in time to kill more of our wounded stack.

Does anyone have any comment about the way I attacked with my stack? In my writeup it showed the order and odds I faced. Did I lead with the right units or was there probably a better way to go about it? I know I got lucky with wins on several low odds battles, but that shouldn't color the tactical advice. I read a comment by Speaker in his PB6 thread somewhere that said to evaluate the process, not the outcome. I didn't have time to sim out a battle when I played this morning and honestly, that's not something I want to do.

Looked like a fine order of battle to me, trying to do maximal damage with the losers and then get kills at >50% odds. Awesome that the spears got in those kills, pity about the third being unable to get it stuck in. We need to roll forward, actually, those were probably more defensive than offensive in nature. If they attack into our stack I'll be happy as a clam, but I doubt it. We need to get enough xp for our own GG soon, a supermedic would be awesome. Promoting one chariot to medic now isn't terrible though.

Commodore, when the turn rolls over it's in your capable hands. I have to be at work on time tomorrow to do an 8 AM interview (make....it.....STOP......) and am leaving for the weekend in the early afternoon, so no turn for me on Friday. I'll be back on Sunday night unless I get scheduled for an interview in Tampa Monday morning. I'll keep you posted (probably just plan play until I post that I'm back). By the way, have I said thanks for coming on board? jive

Your build plan looks good, if we're able to take the city we'll need to settle the wheat in between the new site and our existing cities. I do wonder about the settler build now, though...do you think we immediately need to settle that location more than building further reinforcements? That's a tough call because I know if we stop expanding we'll die, but in spite of my RNG luck I did manage to kill off quite a few of our own troops. (Too bad for their families -- a tyrant never apologizes, which is something that truly irritates my wife). lol

I panicked in sending the workers back home, scurrying to safety. I had doubt as to whether we'd be able to take the city and no idea about what enemy forces may be lurking in the fog, I thought maybe they'd be able to counter-attack and take the workers. If you're the eternal optimist, I'm more of an eternal pessimist. I like the plan to harass with a woodsman II spear/dog, that could be fun if we can spare units from the attacking stack. I can't remember offhand, but I don't think I killed off our woodsman I dog in the assault (but I could be wrong -- I know I did kill off some of the finest thoroughbreds the world has known).

I think I had humbler dreams going into this game. My first goal was to not be first eliminated (check!), next up was to not embarrass myself too much in the game (I failed on that count, my opening was terrible but there is still time for redemption), and a general longish term goal was to try to finish in the top half by the end of the game. Whether that means I'm among the last half of players assimilated by whoever turns out to be the Borg, or if I survive to the end and can be counted among the relevant teams still in play, or some other positive outcome, I'll be happy with that. If I had started with a double gems/gold/food porn dream start I still would still be outplayed by the better players in this game and they'd probably be able to overcome their handicap and beat me anyway, and I could live with that. This is all about the journey, not the outcome. I'm having fun with this and trying to get better, so when I get to the end of the game and read my own obituary there should be something to learn from it. And if any of this amuses anyone along the way, that's good too.

Y'know, it sounds like she's pretty awesome to have a job worth moving for and to be able to handle house and kids thru all this. thumbsup

ADMIN ADMIN I NEED SOMEONE TO DELETE THIS POST BEFORE WIFEY SEES IT! lol

If I'm Mao of Native America, she's HC of India: Financial, Industrious, and a fast worker? Yes please! (Note to the admins, you should probably delete this post too!) Yes, I'm very lucky that she tolerates both me and my civ habit.

I thought your order of attackers was fine. There is pro and con to leading with the riskier units first, but if you're facing long odds it can work out better than a more conservative approach. If the first units had failed to do any significant damage, you would have had the option of calling off the attack before risking the stronger units.
