Buying a new Computer - Q&A

That was the difference between the 2550K and the 2500K, the 2500 is functionally identical to the 2500K except with unlocked multi. Not that it even matters really since it'll run anything.

I need to buy a DVD-ROM drive for my computer. Tell me what I should buy. :-)

Okay that's not really a question but are there different kinds / different slots for different kinds of (desktop) computers?

How do you insert a CD into the computer?

Most desktops use 5.25" drives. You usually get a large tray that you place the CD on.

Some desktops and most laptops use slim-line trays. Then you get a small tray where you affix the CD with the centre hole. (There might be slim-line drives with trays, but I haven't seen any.)

You might also have a slot-loading drive (as used by many of Apple's computers), though it is unlikely. Then you only push the CD through a slot into the drive.

Slim DVD drives in my experience are really a pain in my experience. Most of the cheap desktop ones are OEM ones made for laptops and the eject button doesn't seem to work due to not having the OEM driver/firmware.

Yeah I have a "regular" DVD rom slot, not like the one that's in my laptop

Mostly get anything and it should work. Searching on Newegg gives you most of the info you need. Just make sure it works on SATA and is the right size. Personally I bet on a Samsung and it hasn't let me down yet.

Optical drives in that format is a dime a dozen. Only question then is if it is connected to the rest of the computer via SATA (newer computers) or IDE (older). The manual for the computer should tell you, otherwise it's just a question of opening the computer and taking a look.

SATA: small and slim contact
IDE: very wide contact and cable

Wikipedia has pictures of the cables.
