Civ5 Adv1 Honourable America by TheArchduke

Slight delay on posting this thanks to a crazy work week. Thanks for hosting this game!

I decided against a testgame on this one as I am curious on how things develop without milking the AI for money.

The american trait at the start is a nice boost to exploration giving you an edge on ruins and early settling decisions. Although the city location northeast is nice.
As an added boost I decided to revisit the honourable rules from Civ 3 and Civ 4 as this is the very first adventure.

This means, no offensive wars on City States or Civs, no ganging upon one (honouring defensive pacts is ok), no taking workers from barbarians and not returning them, no milking CS for experience nor barb camps for influence and experience, no pillaging, no razing, no destruction of an enemy civ, no nukes, no slaves from civs or Cs no Autocracy, Order or Piety(instead we go with Freedom, Liberty and Patronage as they strike me as suitable for America.) and nothing sneaky (I look at you worker steal!). If someone declares war on us twice! we are free to wage war on them till the end as they have choosen unwisely.

1944 Diplomatic victory. Apart from culture bomb we used every specialist for his two actions. I had fun in this game and I think with the SG and this ADV we should definitely consider no milking the AI for money to go on the standard RB exploit list.smile

Off we go, despite the promise of a nicer city 2 tiles to the NE, we settle in place as I spot a nice city location east of the northern wheat.

We start of with a scout and Pottery.

3940 BC

Pottery is popped from a hut, Mining next, I aim for Masonry as Marble is a good wonder builder and with liberty early expansion is taken care off.

3700 BC

Edinburgh is found (15 gold) whilst my first scout starts exploring, my second is enroute.

3640 BC

I get a Pop hut and meet Japan to the east. If he has his capital nearby an early dow is assured in my experience.

3580 BC

I do not want to rely on capturing an early worker. Washington starts one before a monument. Masonry is started

Barbs camps spotted through hut, bleh.

Monaco spotted to the north.

Southern Scout is now an archer courtesy to advanced weaponry in a ruin.

The Rock of Gibraltar is found to the northeast, becoming a high priority target to obtain. It will probably mean war with Tokuwaga.

Liberty Opener taken, first worker built, monument next, France found. I bring home the warrior to help protect settlers and workers.

A great general is spotted in Kyoto. Another ruin popped for pop.

2800 BC

In preparation for the marble I start building stone works, relying on my second city on Liberty.

My scout turned archer and my warrior are back, my free settler pops from Liberty. Time to expand.

2440 BC

I get writing. About -200 gold now compared to a normal game as I would milk AIs for cash from now on. Bugger.

2380 BC

I start the GL in the capital supported by 5 pop, marble, stone, stoneworks this means 9 turns.

2320 BC

Normally I would have settled New York City on the coast but this being Pangea and the ability to cheapily buy 2 tiles towards the Rock makes me settle inland on the river. Coupled with the Rock, I get 12 gold per turn, enabling a possible buy of a library and focus on the National College before filling my corner of the continent out.

2140 BC

Barbarians plunder the marble shortly costing me valuable time.

2020 BC

My free worker from Liberty starts to chop a forest to support the GL.

I sign a RA with Rome with open borders.

1840 BC

I enter the Middle Age with Theology from the GL. Things progress nicely it seems. Except for the library in New York which is not buyable for some more turns thanks to the RA. I aim for the Oracle next. Expansion has to wait for NC.

1780 BC

I settled New York on 2 Horses, at least I get +1 production the city tile.

1600 BC

I refuse a RA from Bismarck. I need to keep my money together more. I decide to hand build the library in 10 turns in New York.

1420 BC

Bismarck after denouncing me, goes after Napoleon.

1300 BC

The Oracle is done, to support my diplomatic victory way, I go for Patronage next. But not before finishing Liberty nearly.

New York starts a settler.

1000 BC

Ramkhamheng demands cotton after a Friendship declaration. And as I am not selling the stuff, I can give it away for free.

More as a placeholder, I built Stonehenge in Washington. Normally I play Emperor or higher, so I am surpised how easy I get those wonders.

800 BC

My Scout gets promoted to visibility +1 which together with Americas UT makes him quite special. I finish Liberty, taking the GE more out of habit. Normally I would rush a wonder, but I will build a manufactory for a northern city.

760 BC

New York finishes a settler and starts on an archer and latter another warrior for more protection as Washington churns out settlers after NC.

640 BC

The third planned city location is blocked by a sieged barb camp. Awesome. Well I clear it up for Siam.

600 BC

New York builds a catapult and Washington a swordsman to discourage Japan from disturbing me.

560 BC

Better then building two workers, I start the Pyramids in Washington.

480 BC

Boston is founded north near the sea. A destroyed barb camps gives a worker I return it.

440 BC

Rome dows me for no reason, i guess he will send warriors my way. My catapult and swordsman stand ready.
My archer runs into a horseman of Rome, after loosing 9 hp I retreat.

240 BC

The Pyramids are finished. I now start to build settlers in Washington.

160 BC

Japan wants to be friends, and someone builds the Great Lighthouse, you can not have them all and on Pangea... Ah well.

80 AD

I destroy the odd roman unit and return a worker to Kuala Lumpur. Damn you rules!

200 AD

Supported by a Manufactory, Boston builds the Coloss.

470 AD

Rome makes peace.

560 AD

Napoleon completes the Hagia Sofia before Boston. I churn out settler after settler.

620 AD

New York finished Chitzen Itza, Washington Hanging Gardens quickly before another settler.

680 AD

Napoleon reaches the Renaissance Area before me. Ah well I am still in the expansion phase.

840 AD

Napoleon dows, as I reach 2 important patronage policies, I defend myself with 2 swords and 2 catapults.

1100 AD

Notre Dam is finished giving me a much needed happiness boost as I have too many cities with pop 2-3. The Forbidden Palace is rushed immeaditly afterwards with a GE.

1180 AD

Thanks to markets and colloseum coming up I get 1-2 more pop each turn.
My balance goes from -1 to 17. My Science doubles from 40 to 80. I am getting somewhere by now.
I build an academy near Washington.

1240 AD

The Porcelain Tower is built in New York. This time I will pop a tech in the future.

1320 AD

My infrastructure gets better.

Monuments-Workshops-Markets-Collosei-Banks come online. I get my first citystate ally with my first 500 gold ever in this game. Friendly Ragusa, Maritime. With Sugar.

Democracy is adopted, netting 22 happiness thanks to a plethora of specialists. Hospitals are in place in most cities.

Running out of useful things to build, I build 5 stables for the 1-2 hammers per city. SoL is finished.

GE out of Washington, Manufactory

Napoleon dows a 2nd time. Our patience is exhausted, they have choosen unwisely.

All cities start one round of infantry and artilleries to smash Napoleon into dust.

Upgrading units is done with caution as money is still tight. 242 per turn in golden age must go to CS..

Napoleon steals the Brandenburg Gate, but my troops advance on Lyon.

I'm still thinking about the best way to start with workers. The standard play seems to be monument first, then take the Liberty social policy for the free worker. That comes a bit late, around turn 22 (normal speed), but I think it's okay because workers aren't as good in Civ 5. All tile improvements add just one productivity; you don't need a worker quite so fast to get your 6-food corn.

Yeah, Liberty and Patronage were just about the only way to go in this scenario. Getting to Globalization for the diplo victory requires expanding for research, so you wouldn't go Tradition and the policy costs would get too high to do much else.

Nice clean sweep of the city states. You allied with CS much earlier than I did, so the culture got you an additional policy tree in Freedom. I still got to Globalization faster though, probably with more use of lightbulbing (5 total) and research agreements (also about 5.)

Yeah... With the restriction against AI money, what to do with gold is actually some pretty decent strategy material. Upgrading units, research agreements, city-states, or building purchases are all possibilities, but you can't do all of those at the same time.
