Potluck Start Comparisons

This can of worms got opened in the Native American thread lol (where I was complaining about my (Native American) start and I thought the topic deserved its very own thread, so here they are (in no particular order)

Native Americans

I hope people don't mind that I grabbed these shots from their reports, but it was the easiest way to make these comparisons.

So I would rank them:

1. Dutch (Financial with Fish, Gold and floodplains)
2. Ethiopia (Stone, with enough food to work all those hills)
3. Khmer (Two happy resources, although moving capital optimal)
4. Native American (Plenty of food & production, when Copper shows up)
5. Mayan (No fresh water but two seafood as Financial + Copper & hills)
6. Portugal (Plenty of food and forests, but no production)
7. Byzantine (No fresh water, AH pre-req or Fishing)
8. Babylon (Best feature is it is in the temperate zone)

My list is the similar to Darrells, but with Mayans at 7, Byzantines at 8 and Babylonians at 5. What's wrong with the babylonian start Darrell? You have it last? 2 food resources, a river, plenty of grassland, 3 hills and a lighthouse lake.

My list would be

1. Dutch (Gold and 2 Food)
1. Khmer (Gold and 2 food if you want it)
3. Babylon (2 food and river)
3. Mayans (3 food and copper)
5. Byzantium (2 food)
5. Ethiopia (2 food, settling on the silks was the thing to do I think)
5. Portugal (if you moved and saw the silver and settled to get the 2 food and the silver) then this could be the 3rd best cap, otherwise it is sort of blah
6. Native American (1 food, some floodplains) copper somewhat a mitigating factor, but for this civ it is a useless resource unit wise

It's a pet peeve...I hate having 3 ocean tiles in the BFC. I originally had them 7th and Byzantines last, but I didn't want people to call me whiner wink.

Whiner huh, coast or ocean if it does not have a resource I don't like it

It's not just about the capital location, it's the number and quality of city sites that can be easily grabbed peacefully

It's actually 2, and one of them has fish, but who cares what your city is like when it grows from size 18 to 19? All a capital needs is about 12 good tiles.

In this respect I think that

The Native Americans had the best surrounding land, followed by the Ethiopians and then Khmer
