People aren't used to script-generated maps though, and it showed.

+1. This game didn't end because of unequal land. Adapting and climbing up from underdog position can be very rewarding. At least I enjoyed the challenge provided to me.

Looking back, I think one of the biggest game-effecting things from my perspective - aside from my starting geography - was Twinkletoes' decision not to finish Meditation and claim Buddhism when he had the opportunity. That really ended up being a huge deal for me. Had I had a religion in this game (which I never acquired at any point until 1 captured city at the very end), I would have been far better off. Early monasteries and temples... not to mention religious civic benefits (extra hammers/XP/GPP's), a reason to build Sankore/Minaret, and the ability to build the AP/a shrine. Shwedagon + Free Religion doesn't hold a candle to any of that. Then again, considering how well I did without a religion, maybe it was for the best. lol

Although I don't doubt that I would have been in a bit of trouble once Astronomy rolled around for several players. I do think Mackseven had a very real chance of coming out on top in the end, if the attention of the world remained fixed on me rather than them. They had such a steep rise in research towards the end - not to mention all that conquered land they were about to get - that they'd potentially have been a very real threat to win if I was taken down a notch or two post-Astronomy while they were left alone.

Anyway, it was an interesting game. For me it was a good reminder of just how painful it is not to have a religion in Always War. Also, call me a Pyramids convert - despite building a heap of wonders and carefully structuring my builds and research to try to pull ahead, Mackseven were always close on my heels... and that was with them being hounded by Xenu for much of the game. That one wonder really made their whole game, and I can imagine how much stronger they'd have been had they been free to expand and build infrastructure without fighting a drawn-out early war.

Oh man, yeah. Especially being spiritual. Without religion you lose half the benefit of the trait. It was painful.

Yeah, that was the one thing that actually saved my game and allowed me to continue having fun. Plus the fact that the one I ended up having to go for was the beeline for Theology when I realized that was my only option and no one else had gone for it. The free switching between Organized Religion and Theocracy was key for me being able to survive as long as I did.

I realized my biggest mistake in the early game was going for Great Wall instead of Pyramids. Maybe I'll go back and try to calculate it (or not...maybe someone else more skilled at the technicals can?), but I'm almost positive I would have beaten mackseven to it because I had the Stone.

I also think you would have been better off building the Apostolic Palace than the Hagia Sophia. Or potentially just putting all those hammers into military instead. smile

Yeah, well that's also typically another one of my Civ downfalls....I get hooked on wanting to get wonders when they're available....and when I have the resource (ie. Stone in this case) to make them complete faster.
Plus, at the time I was lacking on Workers (after plako captured two of them duh) and the quicker improvement making was a great help in getting me caught up in some regards.

The otehr thing to note is that trying to lurk this big a game is really tricky. In the end I just ended up following Pindicator and hence had no idea weven as a lurker what was happening elsewhere

It's a pity that the game ended and we did not get such a dramatical ending as e.g. PB6, but as a lurker I think there were still lots of interesting stuff going on throughout the game, and therefore I would not describe the game as a disappointment. Here some examples that I enjoyed following in somewhat chronological order:

1. Different reactions to unbalanced starting positions (highlighted by Mackseven wandering around and getting bronze directly inside capital radius)
2. Impressive Axe rush to Azzaland
3. ASM's Pink Dot & ASM+LP pushing TT until LP was able to clean the area.
4. Commoxenu's dog soldier invasion and Mackseven's balancing between military & economy
5. Yuris' naval invasion that tried do steal gems from HAK
6. Ichabod's invasion to Rome and Sunrise razing the GLH
7. LP's tech snowballing (although I would have enjoyed reading the plans instead of "btw this turn we landed MoM" since it's always fun to compare expectations with actuals)
8. Plako's "making the most out of islands since there is no other way to go"
and additionally:
9. Pindicator's detailed reporting
10. Every post made by Ichabod

I hope that the lessons learned are quickly captured and bad feelings put away so that the next Pitboss can soon be started. If my RL one day get's less hectic I'll definitely join the fun. Until then.. *that popcorn smiley*
