Can't tell if that was your intent or not, but I love Egypt.

I like Egypt for the starting techs, the deterrent factor of the UU, and the UB can be useful, especially since I think it's certainly possible that we get a religion but none of the early Priest wonders, so it can be useful to pop one out to get a shrine
Plako's post at CFC a while ago gave the approximate map size:
80-100 x 40-60 Assuming a land based map with a simple balanced toroidal layout of 9 teams: Code: X X X Then we could expect distances between civs of: 13-20 tiles (N-S) 27-33 tiles (E-W) Assuming something more elongated, like this: Code: X X X X Distances between civs would then be: ~10-30 tiles (N-S) ... probably 20-30 16-20 tiles (E-W) So as a rough idea, the approximate distance we might expect to our nearest neighbour would be ~16-18 tiles... possibly slightly less. So a bit of breathing room, though not much. Two near neighbours settling one city each towards one another would be close to sharing borders. Yeah, Egypt would be useful to have, I think.
We already have a strong early game thanks to our leader . I think we need to focus more on mid game strong UB or UU. What about England (fishing, mining)? We are financial and if we can hook up a sea food early (8 turn) it will give us 30% to our early teching. Not to mention Redcoats dominate renesance era and are draftable.

I think I'd rather have Mali or Egypt, but England's good. Fishing is either great or useless early, though. Cyneheard Wrote:Fishing is either great or useless early, though. Yeap, but if we have a sea food and don't have fishing it will be pretty terible. If we have any crop and we don't have agriculture we can research it before our worker pop up.
What exactly is the concern with vultures? Yes, I know they lose to axes in a straight-up fight in the open. How often do we expect this to come up?
Defending in a city with increasing defense bonus, the difference between vultures and axes lessens and even starts to go the other way. And they are better defenders against everything other than axes, including praetorians (slightly) and mounted units. All that said I really like Egypt and Ottomans too. Ottomans are good insurance if we don't get as much happy as we want. Egypt simply has one of the best UU around. Mali and China aren't bad but their techs are worse in my view. They start with 18b less; that's like two turns of research! And Mali will need to tech Hunting - Archery to get access to its UU. That will take forever - at least 162 base beakers. We need AH, BW and Pottery (plus potentially Hunting or Fishing for food) and those alone will take us quite long enough. England has bad starting techs and redcoats are a bad UU. How many games here have seen decisive rifle warfare where redcoats would make a difference? I'd say zero.
Banking on a later UU makes winning easier, it doesn't put you in the dominant position to do so. I'm in favor of an early UU since it will be more flexible. Not sure about Mali or Egypt. I'm leaning towards Egypt for more tactical flexibility but Skirms will give us a solid resourceless defense and mints are a slightly better UB if you aren't going to go for the fast GP.
Dunno what Fin + 10% mints will do compared to organized boost.

In other news, HRE was picked 8th. Good, we didn't want them and Darius will have to reevaluate.
So only one civ to be picked before we can get ours. |
