scooter Wrote:Emperor level barbs with humans is not a serious threat. It's really different when you don't have AIs inflating their technological level. (I still favor Egypt though)True, but it's still nice to be able to crush them with maximum efficiency.

Just FYI this is an advantage over pretty much every other civ but IMHO not over Mali. I also agree with scooter that we're overestimating the threat of barbs.
I'm leaning towards Egypt. More flexible, plus choking is probably diplomatic suicide since
A. It isn't a duel and you can't take enemy land early due to maintenance. B. ppl already hate you, so being dickish may not be the best idea

I disagree, I think WC are better than skirmishers for barb duty. Sure, skirmishers are better in the city, but I think it's preferable to kill the barbs in the flat land before they get to your city, which WC's are better at (WC's will get odds on both archers and axes in flat ground, whereas skirms will only have odds on archers). Also, WCs are on a tech path we will take anyway, whereas skirms are off a tech path we would want to take. Also, it will be easier to get a HE qualifying unit with WCs, as if you have a unit say at 7xp it is easier to get it that last fight or two it needs if it can move four tiles on roads as opposed to two. Finally, because of the additional movement, it will take less WCs to cover the same area. Even if we are overestimating the threat of barbs, the less emergency whips or even plain units we need to defend against them is more hammers we can put into our snowball.
Egypt is my vote.

Maybe we should start a new betting pool, betting on which civs/leaders our rivals will pair their picks with. :3

It's just that Obelisks doesn't really fit in well with what we are most likely going to do. Oh well, it will be nice to ensure a Prophet if we want to get a Shrine or a specific GP for later GAs.

Two great starting techs and a great UU is pretty good, all in all. And the UB does at least have the potential to be somewhat useful if needed - it's not necessarily entirely worthless. |
