Everything is right, but two things.
1. Early war is very cripling to economy so I don't supose anyone will be interested in it. I think the era of chariots will end without waring much, and after that we will be left without UU or UB.
2. Chariots are easly countered by spears (Impis especialy) and fast become absolete. To absolete axes you have to go very far to macemen, to absolete spears to pikemen, and to absolete Chariots you only have to discover horseback riding. It means Chariots are next to warriors the fastest unit to become absolete.
Zulus have clearly better UU and UB (Ikhanda), which don't become absolete, even more, become stronger the longer the game takes, especialy taking into account we will be playing on emperor difficulty.

Damn you seven!
Also wanted to note, i was just recently thinking about the starting tech value problem you mentioned. I'm in a game on quick/standard and my Myst/Mining start is only an 18 beaker difference to the Agri/Wheel combos, but it does seem like im behind the tech curve a bit.
Although - a lot depends on the start - i.e. the FIN civ that started with lowly fishing gets to work his clams for +2 gold. On quick, he's going to make that deficit up fairly quickly. Does the same idea apply to normal speed?

Can I say, when I was [strike]playing[/strike] ded-lurking PBEM23, I was absolutely terrified of War Chariots?

The picks so far suggest that at least some teams are keeping the option for early aggression open, no matter how self-destructive that might be in this game.
Anyway, regarding game speed. We are playing on Normal right? Last I checked there was little interest in faster/slower settings.

We're on Normal speed.
Oh, and I support some humorous public announcement about the Mysticism situation. Maybe wait until after all of the picks are in, since there might be even more Mysticism civs by then? (I'm expecting Korea at least, maybe Byzantium.)

Also, War Chariots are not obsoleted until Knights. In fact, neither are Chariots as I recall. So we'll have plenty of time to play around with them.

Simply put, WCs serve well enough to replace Horse Archers, and they come cheaper and earlier to boot. They also support a builder's game because the threat of WCs will make opponents think twice about attacking us, instead of looking at say England and thinking "hey wait, maybe i should kill them before they get redcoats".

The Spanish team picked the Zulu. Damn, I was tossing up on Rome or Zulu between them and WePlayCiv, and now I'm going to lose on WePlayCiv too.
Hmm, so they'll be the worst possible civ for anyone to start next to, even though they probably won't have any long-term prospects. Their pick practically screams "EARLY RUSH!!!", and Agg/Chm Impis won't be fun to deal with. Unfortunately on a toroidal map with 9 players there's probably a ~50% chance they'll share some border with us.

Spanish team choices look almost handpicked to take us down. We pick a civ that is great at fighting every early unit bar spearmen, they pick the civ with a spearman UU. Sigh.

Basically means we need some axeman for ourselves as well... Sigh.
