Hi,

unfortunately, I get asked for a password when trying to go to page 2. Which is too bad, as the first page of your report was a very good read! wink

Welcome to RB, and an impressive win given your experience level! I have many points on your game, but overall I would like to say that your well thought out approach and excellent report were enjoyable to witness smile.

1. Sorry for this, but you were allowed to settle on turn one. It was a weakness of the design that the variant rule was so hard to ensure compliance. On the talk page this came up, and early on the player was given latitude to avoid a weaker opening. It worked out for you though, those Cows were probably worth the turn delay smile.

2. The blue circele that popped up would generally make you think there is a seafood resource in the fog, but Blake one time said that the blue circles should be ignored before you found your first city. That was with the Better AI mod, not sure if it is still true in BTS.

3. Archery first is probably not necessary. Even on Emperor you have enough time to find Horse or Copper before the barbarians become a threat. Note that it isn't in the manual, but even early barbarian Warriors won't enter your cultural borders! Of course in this game it was the right move since there were no strategic resources nearby.

4. Scouts get better results, which means that when you would have popped Barbarians the game re-rolls for you, not that they bump one up on the result list.

5. Excellent analysis of what finding Mansa's Scout meant, you took into account important details and reached the proper conclusion thumbsup. Sealing off an opponent is not a beginner move IMO.

6. Using units to remove the fog of war and prevent barbarians from showing up is also an excellent move, did you learn that one on the forums or from experimentation?

7. I think that your Pyramids date was okay, it was fairly close to sooooo's if I recall. Grabbing the Pyramids and sealing off Mansa were the two key early goals and you pulled them both off just fine.

8. Have you read yet about WFYABTA (We Fear You are Becoming Too Advanced)? It is a mechanism by which the AIs will stop tech trading with you after a certain number of techs traded. Each take counts equally towards the limit, so trading for cheap techs like Mysticism is generally avoided. Of course there are some subtleties to the mechanic which make it okay in some situations, but I encourage you to read up on this mechanic as it can play a significant role.

9. You clearly understand the mechanics of a cultural victory, had you done it before?

Darrell

P.S. Would it be possible to summarize the tech position at the end of your game?

I always try to expand to the closest AI and grab as much land as I can. I am a builder kind of person and I am not very good at waring, so this is the way I try to give my Empire "lebensraum"

From Sulla's reports smile

Thanks. I didn't know that.

Nope. But I read everything I can find on the Web about cultural vicotry. The bigest help was "War Academy" on civfanatics.

When I return home I will post it from my last save. I wanted to put my saves and replay on the page but unfortunately I can put only images there and only up to 200 KB each. Is it possible to put the saves and replay here on forum?

Hey, Mortius! Welcome to Realms Beyond!

Well, it was a pretty good read! Congratulations on the victory and report!

I just have one tiny thing to say, and it's not about how you played the game... Man, that lime background is... how can I say?.... shiny! eek
Would you please consider changing it for future events? Old people like me have sensible eyes! lol
