Pfft it's not like it isn't going to be Always War with half the other teams anyway.

I'd like to echo the earlier message again for good measure. Just because two people from one team are behaving in a rather objectionable manner doesn't mean everyone else will. It's wrong to let our fun and enjoyment be defined by them. And it's probably exactly what they want.
There's 8 other teams and the majority of which seem to be mature, polite and pleasant and there's a pretty decent chance that we'll be interacting with at least some of them before we even meet CFC in-game. Focus on that rather than the current stuff.

I think this applies to our situation more.

One thing we haven't discussed much here is how to conduct early game diplo. To my mind, there are basically three different stances to take in diplomacy:
- Small favours now
- Big promises for later
- Aloofness
I think our best shot at gaining trust is by following the first strategy: small favours now. Not only chat early, but always looking for ways to give or exchange small favours, so that when or if we need bigger favours later, there is a large chance of a favourably response, or so the other team won't join into an alliance against us.
I also think using small favours now is an effective counter against teams using big promises for later.
So, what early diplo and small favours can we use?
- Map info. We can't trade screen shots until paper, but we can give directions and terrain descriptions.
- Settling agreements. I don't think we should agree to broad border agreements, but we should be open to discuss the placement of specific cities, and capping culture production at reasonable levels.
- EP spending agreements, eg limiting EP spending so both teams have graph visibility.
- Gifting a missionary (if we have our own religion). We can use this to sweeten a deal.
- Sweeten trade agreements. Add some money, or toss in a low-value resource as a bonus.
I imagine we will enter into almost all diplomacy as the stronger part. Gaining a reputation for and showing magnanimousness will help us not being resented for that.

What were the things that really made the templar's happy in the apolyton demogame? Even if the other teams are less troublesome to deal with, they'll have similar immediate concerns and goals.

We wrote them back and forth a bunch of bullshit roleplaying messages, stalled for time to pass, and then waited for their atrocious opening and awful micro to leave them in our dust. GG the end. I think that much of that team is actually on the We Play Civ roster for this game though, so keep that in mind.
Templars had the best micro opening ever. Here it is: quechua (T8), quechua (T17), quechua (T24), worker (T36), settler (T47). I could spend pages writing about how horrendous that was... not exactly the fastest opening path, huh?
