Best Event Ever

Note the event in red and what happened shortly after. It's an emperor level game as the Khmer:

I got the event that causes barbarians to appear at your borders. For some reason I thought they were out in the fog, that they couldn't appear where I had line of sight. Boy, was I wrong -- the appeared at the red square below, just one tile outside my cultural borders.

I did a quick check, didn't see the archers that had spawned on the one tile that was between my culture and ocean, and figured I was safe. Next turn 4 archers are 2 turns away from my capital and I have a sole warrior for defense.

This being a personal game, I find it hilarious. Had it been an Epic or other "scored" event, I probably would have been livid.

Now, in all fairness, it is true that I had horses hooked up. If I would have noticed the archers right away (and realized they could enter borders already) then I could have revolted to slavery right away and whipped a chariot after a turn of production.

If that was an Epic or Adventure then that 'event' would be in the mixer for everyone. Imagine this event happening for everyone ... reporting day sure would be short.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Aren't events disabled in a lot of games to prevent completely random stuff like that from really skewing the games? I realize that all the Epics and Adventures will start with the same seed, but individual game randomness will set in after some time.

I think we will probably see at least a good portion of games with events turned on. I think Sullla even said somewhere that he favors events being on as the default setting.

There is also this tidbit of information to bear in mind:
Sirian Wrote:One thing that plays in the favor of including events, though, is that the events are a bit like a deck of cards, and some of the cards are removed from the deck (at random) at the start of each game. So the deck as a whole that you are playing with in any given game will shift from game to game. But for a tourney event, everyone is playing off the same save, the same start -- and the same deck of event cards for that game. THAT will remove quite a bit of the randomness. ... Past that, it's something to explore and find out about. Probably be some surprises in there both ways. People can see what they think of the results and game sponsors can go from there.
So a game sponsor could potentially play through the early turns and get an idea of what events might be likely and re-gen a start if they didn't suit. There's undoubtedly a way to stack the deck too.... wink

Yes, and I certainly missed that change in the change log.

It seems running a single defender in cities in 3.13 is akin to playing with fire, even in the extremely early stages of the game. If all 4 archers attack, what would a safe defense constitute? 2 archers? 4 warriors? Not sure at all on this, but I know it is a larger hammer commitment than I've previously given to city defense.

Or better, just build the Great Wall every game.
