Menagerie played and did NOT settle on this turn. Interesting.

I think that's especially interesting considering how fast they played their turn. I don't think we even considered a capital spot that wouldn't have let us settle on turn 1 unless there was something amazing in the fog. If they were looking at the same or similar start as us, then the scout or warrior must have found something. But then you'd think they'd want to take the time to discuss the next move, not rush off and end turn without settling.

1300 land tiles out of 2704 total (52x52). Means this map has a lot of water (and circumnavigation is definitely available, but will probably require caravels).

Do we need vertical as well as horizontal full coverage for circumnavigation, since this is a toroidal map?

Yup.

Team Menagerie must had decided their city spot before exploring and found nothing in the fog to change their mind. The starts can't be mirrored, if so.

Given what we know of the map -- some islands reachable by galley, some reachable only with Astro -- how urgent is it to settle a coastal city? We have some water directly south of us, and it appears to extend at least a fair ways to the SW. What priority should we place on getting a coastal city so we can send out some exploring WBs, or to begin building towards the Great Lighthouse?

Much will obviously depend on just how much water our exploring units reveal. But we can choose -- or not choose -- to emphasize exploration towards the water, settling towards the water, etc. Just something to keep in mind as we consider our options.

The bottom coast should be a sea to give access to the ocean. Sadly, there's a far better site to the left, (Corn/Ivory/Cow/River), compared to the Fish/Crabs site below. I think we'll be better off just settling land first, then thinking about the sea. (one city on an island for international trade routes though?)

A work boat scouting might be handy as well.

I agree that somewhere to the north and west looks like our most promising site for city #2 (although we might still find something better north or east). But the coastal issue is something we should keep in mind as we plan. Maybe we need to push for city #3 very soon after city #2, and target it for the coast?

Anyway, just one more issue to think about. smile

Looking at the latest picture, do deer appear on plains hills naturally? I don't remember ever seeing it, but I haven't played as many maps as you guys (especially if it's a modified donut, like SevenSpirits was suggesting).
