There's not really a need for a rush, but there's not much harm either. AIs don't punish you very well for making investments like this like we're used to seeing in MP games here.

This start reminds me a lot of the Epic Five start by the way. Not quite as ugly, but it reminded me of it anyways.

Yeah, it's actually better to attack before you met all AIs due to the war declaration malus in diplomacy.

Thing is, I see people rushing a lot in SP games, either it's with axes, chariots or UUs. It seems that it becomes too much of an always needed strategy (speaking for the games posted in civfanatics as experience). And it's far from it, since it isn't safe to do in deity, for example (I see people chariot rushing in Deity with some disbelief) and it seems to hinder people from developing other skills (because you always win due to having 2 times the land of your opponents).

I haven't played civ4 for a while, but I did play monarch level before so I'll give it a try. Also while I am sure rushing is the right play here with this mediocre land, I personally do not like early rushes so eliminating it from my consideration.

I'd settle NW of corn first, then PH located 4S of capitol. If iron working is finished by then and AI cities does not hamper with my settling, grab happiness resource by settling 3S from my first corn city. Otherwise, place third settler on jungled hill NE of cow located at Southern coast. Nothing else but filler cities to throw after that, but before those I'd seriously consider exploring the northwestern landmass for more information.

No concrete plan on how to win yet but I'm sure as the turn passes I have decent chance to overtake AI regardless.
