RBP stands for Realms Beyond Perceptions, perhaps, Realms Beyond Photoshop.

RBP is for the photographer in all of us.

I like Perceptions, it fit in well with photography and it sounds cool. There’s been a RBP sub site (just a couple of pages) for quite awhile now, some of you might even have chanced upon. At the moment, it is only a subset of RBI where I upload some of my doodling. Hehe, there is even a RBD parody inside RBI.

Realms Beyond Photoshop also serves as a good name since the site is about photos. Furthermore, Photoshop (the software) plays an important role in today’s photography whether it be in digital or traditional format. Photoshop (or other graphic software) is the digital darkroom, where photos can be enhanced with as much control as a traditional darkroom, where otherwise ordinary photos can be manipulated with various effects to turn into something more interesting, to something quite artful.

I am seeing things! Again!

I was going to be a photographer. It seems like a life time ago now. I can’t remember what inspired me to take up photography. I could be just as happy to be a potter sculptor, painter or musician. Perhaps it’s because photography is more portable. Perhaps I thought the medium is an easy way for an average person to have some sort of artistic creative outlet. Photography opened my eyes to the world around me. I started to look at things from different angles, imagining what the same things would look like in different seasons, weather conditions and lighting situations. I became more aware of little details in ordinary everyday object/scenery because I was always looking for photo opportunities. I was able to isolate the beauty of things in our visually polluted world when I use the camera or my minds eyes to frame a shot. I understood why war photographers would risk their lives to grab that once in a lifetime shot with a wide angle lens… This does not mean it turned me into a good photographer, but I was seeing things.

I’ve recently taken up photography again in the effort of fighting insomnia. I spend too much time on the computer - playing games and working on various things. While this is not evil in itself, it can be a major time sink and does wonders for someone with a case of chronic insomnia - if you want to be a walking zombie. My renewed interest gets me out of the house away from the computers. I am once again paying attention to the world around me. I am seeing things again.

So why RBP?
Most people own a camera, alas; most of these cameras are probably collecting dust in the closet. It is safe to say that these camera owners are/were interested in photography at one time or another, with varying degrees of involvement. I would wager that you would put your camera to use more often if there is a support group, if we can make it fun and hopefully rewarding as well. I want to stay with photography and hope to find likeminded folks from the RB. You don’t need to be a professional photographer, you don’t need to have an expensive camera, and you only spend as much time with it as you wish.

What I have in mind for RBP is to create a friendly environment
To share pieces of ourselves through photography. It can be pictures of your love ones, pets, landscapes and inner visions.
Where we can exchange ideas and learning from each other, encourage and motivate each other.

We would have monthly assignments. This will be fun, and it gives everyone a reason to take pictures. There can even be a friendly contest of our results in the way of “People’s Choice” awards – everyone on the forum (not professionals) get to vote on their favorites.

I was quiet about RBP because it depends on two things.

- I am currently looking into web apps that would serve our purposes - To host and showcase member photographs. I have “Gallery” installed but I am also looking at Mambo and see what kind of tricks I can pull with it.

- I am not sure if we have enough interested on starting something like this. So lets see some hands, questions and comments are always welcome.

This, of course, just means I now have to ask what RBI is... smile

I am into photography, when time permits. Still doing it the conventional chemical way, until I get myself a digital camera, hopefully a SLR. But I did start to scan the films when I had them developed, so I have digital copies of the more recent photographs and will love to share among like-minded people.

Hi,

'Realms Beyond Perceptions' sounds very nice, especially in light of your "I'm seeing things!" explanation, while "RB Photoshop" is too narrow-minded - there are lots of other "difital darkrooms" as well, like the GIMP.

I like the idea a lot, maybe because I'd like to be a better photographer than I actually am. I never owned a camera until five years ago, and then only used it for holiday snapshots. One reason I didn't use it more often is that I felt my pictures looked awful - both motive and image quality, and (at least with the latter) I had no idea what went wrong. Now my wife and I bought us a digital camera for christmas, which will make experimenting a lot easier and cheaper. So I for my part would love to see an RBP site where people I already 'know' showcase and discuss photographs/image processing. (Although it remains to be seen if I'll be bold enough to show my pictures when people like Jaffa or you post theirs tongue)

But what about image hosting? Your posting sounds as if you plan to offer server space to host images - that could get full real fast, depending on the level of participation/image quality. Or do people have to have their own server space to host images? That would be a killer for many, as can be seen at RBCiv.

P.S.: Hm, whatever RBI is, maybe I should use my trusted URL-guessing skills again... tongue

I just bought me a Canon S1 IS this summer to start myself off. I would spend the money to buy a digital SLR once I am sure I am back (into photography). The Canon is a very nice middle of the road digital camera with some cool features such as full motion (30 frames/sec) 640x400 video mode, a very nice image stablizer. It is not the best (in terms of resolution) camera in the price range but its 10x optical zoom is very hard to beat if you don't plan to spend thousands on a set of lenses.

Just a caution in case you are into action photography. One thing I find most annoying about digicams is the delay between the time you press the button to the time the actual picture is taken. Cameras varies in respond time, so make sure to keep that in mind when you are shopping.

http://www.photobucket.com is a very clean and professional free picture hosting service website. There are others too

Digicam resource links I found useful

http://www.dcresource.com/
In-depth professional reviews and samples galleries of digital camera reviewed

http://luminous-landscape.com/
As a beginner, I liked the tutorials here. Like, explaining aspects of photoshop, and other basics... to intermediate techniques which are too advanced for me. Which brings me to...

http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/glossary
I really like the glossary in here. Another camera review website that's extensive. However, the glossary really shines and helps my beginner's self understand technical terms, what they mean, and new gagdets involved. Color Filter Array? EXIF? That's over my head, but its in here!

http://www.imaging-resource.com/
yet another camera site with reviews, and some tutorials. Quite professional, some ads, but nothing malicious that I can see. I liked it, but haven't spent as much time on this one.

http://www.digital-camera-review.us/
Simple. Effective. A LOT of consumer written reviews here. Spent the most time here. I really like this site.
