1. I suggest a double round robin, because it is the fairest format. You play everyone twice: once with white once with black.

2. Correspondence format is a must IMHO because of timezones and different schedules like Sian said. One little problem is that chess.com only allows time per move and no additional total time control for all moves. Can we do the minimum 1 move per day or do we need 2? There is also the possibility to claim up to 7 days of vacation on chess.com which basically stops your clock in case any player can't access a computer for a few days.

3. We need a tournament director who organizes all the results and acts as a referee. Waterbat has come forward for that job.

4. General correspondence chess rules are: books and databases are ok, engine generated moves are not.

5. I strongly believe we should start very soon (i.e. no later than this weekend). If we take much longer people might lose interest so we should just get going.

Is that acceptable or do we need changes?

What about correspondence with a limit to finish the games? Like 1 or 2 weeks? Both white and black games can go at the same time

Edit: i like gustaran's proposal

The problem is that chess.com doesn't offer any way to track that. A good correspondence site has a time control like "2 days per move" + "30 days for the game", and you lose if you fail to meet either requirement.

On chess.com the problem is if the game takes longer than 2 weeks who loses on time?

I was thinking more as a goal or a guideline to keep things moving along

I would think since we have a good community here, that that would not be a problem as long as we're somewhat regularly checking in here.

Yes, of course we could incorporate a Gentlemen's Agreement regarding the total time.

I recommend starting Friday or Saturday, since Thursday is Thanksgiving.

Also, should those of us already in games get those finished first so w don't have cross game confusion?

If the game names are clearly stated as being the tournament, it should be fine.

Went ahead and rolled up a randomized schedule, assuming that we would want to only have one opponent each week instead of juggling 14 games at a time.

Also, do we want to make a separate thread for discussion and results of the tourney specifically?
