I started off fairly well (with strong Cats & Silicoids & Darlocks) but got a weird bug, where an inflated DOS prompt suddenly appears. Unfortunately that was still in the critical phase of expanding and the last save was to old for me to gather the energy to do it all again.

Argh! Sounds like the rare DOS equivalent of a crash-to-desktop (crash-to-prompt?) to me. I don't know what to do to prevent this sort of thing (except to mitigate it by saving early and often - I usually do due to paranoia about my dinosaur of a machine, but I realize that doing so can break up the flow of the game). I'm sorry to hear a crash bug spoiled this one for you; hopefully, the next will go better!

Doesn't MOO have an auto-save feature which, via the Continue button? I use it all the time.

ETA: of course, unless the auto-save copy have gotten corrupted.
