Well Iâm quite pleased with the end result of this game. My first victory above prince and my first victory ever in an RB event. It feels good to finally be able to report a victory. It may not be much of a report as I didnât take many notes or screenshots but I shall do my best with what Iâve got.
My initial thoughts of choosing a great person was to how do I narrow it down? My playstyle almost always has me generating an early prophet with the artist at music coming pretty early as well. Neither have a huge benefit that I could see so they were out. Had no interest in a merchant and didnât want to try my hand at spying just yet so that left the GE, GS and GG. I thought long and hard about the GE and decided that any early wonder wasnât worth the use of it and it never occurred to me to settle him so I was down to 2. Do I want to war it out or try a peaceful victory of some type? My natural playstyle is pretty peaceful but I was really leaning toward the GG as what better time to learn? Well my comfort zone won out and I chose the GS with the idea of a cultural victory in mind. Early expansion should be a breeze with Imperialistic and Protective should help my peacefully thin military.
So I found in place but not before moving my GS 1S to see if thereâs anything else there. Well so much for a first turn academy. I canât imagine it will set me back too much.
Well after almost immediately meeting Lizzie and discovering copper at my capital soon thereafter I was desperately wanting to change my GS to a GG. Oh well I shall have to try my hand at war another time.
If I remember my tech path started off like this: Polytheism, Fishing, Mining, BW
My build would start with Stonehenge which I would eventually get but I would pause frequently to build workboats, workers and settlers. That was all my capital built for a while. Eventually it would add a granary and the Oracle which took me to Code of Laws. All together I would land Poly, Mono, C.O.L. and Theology with the GP I got from SH and The Oracle.
Naturally my capital was my first legendary, Prague which was founded and designed to be a pure production city would be my 2nd legendary as it also snagged quite a few wonders. When Prague was founded it would build a barracks, temples and military and that was about it for quite a while, atleast until I got Mainz up in running as a smooth military producer. Anyways Iâm getting ahead. Hereâs my first screen shot. As you can see I was pretty aggressive towards Lizzie with Pragueâs placement.
I would also quickly and aggressively found Vienna on Londonâs border as well but after that there was a pause until I realized I was running out of time. I would then quickly found in succession Nuremburg (on the Island just to the west), Mainz and then what would end up becoming my 3rd legendary city Augsberg. Augsberg was a crazy GA Farm with a 100% clean artist pool which was nice. On a side note I had some ridiculously bad luck with barbarian galleyâs around this time. 3 showed up to pillage and plunder my nets around Aachen and Nuremburg. I had to take time out to whip a bunch and it still took me 6 galleyâs to bring down the 3 of them. Well 2 really as Augustus took care of one of them. Just some bad luck on the rolls I guess.
After this there wasnât a whole lot going on. Building temples and other infrastructure, spreading religions, grabbing wonders. This is where it gets real spotty. Most of my screenshots were taken after Iâd already won and reloaded up to get them. This one was taken for 2 reasons. You can see the 2 coastal cities Iâve added up north and that Iâm at war (first of 2) with Izzie. The religious nutcase had had enough of me and decided she would try and take me down. While I was ahead in tech she had a lot more numbers than me. Enough to give me a scare. She almost took Augsberg leaving me with just one unit left but that left her with no offence left so I was happy to seek peace at the first opportunity. The 2nd war which Iâll detail later was a bit longer.
In the next screenshot you can see Canterbury saw the error of the English and would join my civilization. As well if you notice in the minimap thereâs now an offshoot of yellow at the end of a different island. My plan was to settle another city over there to get me to 9 not thinking that I would engulf any English ones. I would later plan on settling another to release them as a colony but that never happened. Not the best decision but it would turn out to be a half decent city.
I would build the AP and be the leader every time the vote came and I was presented with options to be given Canterbury and Warwick which I tried a few times but Lizzie would defy it everytime I tried. I had built the AP to not be the victim of any cheese and atleast I was able to use it to stop my 2nd war with Izzie. I first brought everybody in but nobody really helped me so the next time it rolled around I ended the war. Warwick had already joined my empire through cultural domination but I would lose it to Izzy in the war. It would later join by force of my cultural pressure again but during the course of the war there was no chance of me winning it back. Izzy had put up a much stronger front this time. Her numbers just dwarfed mine and even though I had stronger units she had ridiculous amounts of catapults, swords, axes, spears. Enough that the list wouldnât show it all on the screen. If not for the AP she could have pressed inland to grab Augsberg this time before I could get the forces out. Either way Iâm glad she didnât.
I was the first to Liberalism but I forgot what I took. I would research all the way up to grenadiers to make sure I had some defence and then it was just a matter of maxing the culture slider and cruising home to the win.
Cultural victory in 1752 AD.
And as you can see my best finish yet. My only victory and my first time to be counted as good a leader as Augustus. This was a fun game and my thanks go to the sponsor.
