Turn 79:

some of these pictures are before I played, some after. I took some pics last night before RB went down briefly, so i couldnt report them.

anyway, the barb didn't attack Achilleus. after the pic I retreated to the jungle tile, will wait for him to move to flat ground to attack:

moved Odysseus south:

the good news is, it doesnt seem we have to worry about Azza's culture choking us off from the southern regions. the bad news is we have to slog through jungle 1 tile at a time to get there.

cassandra is in gilgamesh. next turn, she'll put 2 turns into a cottage NE of Gilgamesh before being picked up by the galley for silver city. It does appear that region is safe from barbs. I'll drop the worker off on the silver first, just to be safe - if there is hidden barbs up there I would rather risk a worker than a settler

theIliad:
Tough decision rather to work the food or cottages here. we will 2 pop whip the galley next turn to get it out asap. first turn after the whip ill work a worker to catch the overflow, then switch back to the workboat to grow. in the end I decided to get as much food in the box as possible to help us grow to size 3 quickly and recover from the whip as fast as possible.

in the short term, this is hurting our economy, though:
demos
[Image: TVs3p.jpg]

our GNP is 58 at 100%. we will 3 turn archery, working it 0%, then 50%, then 100%.

Azza does have archery (can tell from the espionage screen and from known tech bonuses). Serdoa does not.
Azza is researching mysticism at 0% at the moment.

turn 80 demos:

our GNP did is due to the 2 pop whip in the Iliad. more interesting is the spike by the rival best. 4 points jump just from turn rolling. CFCJester/Nakor had a score increase and researched a tech, so I'm guessing they had a tech with more bonuses queued up behind it.

<sigh>. Azza has copper:
note the axemen in the living end. either the 4th city he settled the turn before peace was to grab copper, or he is getting it through trade.
I think copper is more likley than Iron here. no praets. Would be useful to know for sure, though - what do we need to do to get trade with Azza?
I really hope this southern peninsula Odysseus is travelling leads to another civ, and not a dead end. If the rest of the world is on Azza's half of hte peninsula only, its going to be difficult to make contact with them.
Peace expires in 3 turns. We need to decide if we want to put our chariots in position to harass the living end (easily raze it if he doesnt put something besides an axe in it) or if we want to let him be and hope for peace.
We'll also need archers and axes in Beowulf soon, in addition to the spears.

this is relevant:

we get 95.9% odds on the warrior on the hill, and 0.4 odds to retreat. if we want peace we should kill it, to prevent azza from getting easy experience for his axe. if we want to put pressure on the living end we should shadow it to try and possibly move in after it. also, if we want peace, odysseus could hang out where he is until the treat expires to encourage azza to fortify the living end with a spear in addition to the axe, then continue exploring south smile.

for C&D: commodore is whipping like crazy. he founded a city last turn and whipped twice. he logged in and whipped once this turn. (from civ stats). I'm guessing that he is at war. Shocking for commodore, I know wink.

well, here's the good news about not having a trade connection with Azza: it means he hasn't completed the road from his capital to Beowulf - which surely means he is more intreested in defense. If he wanted to invade Beowulf he would be foolish not to complete that road.

We do need the trade connection though, if nothing else to know for sure whether he has Iron or copper.
I guess after farming the rice we can escort a worker 1 SE to road the forest tile 1 NW of his roaded pigs. and we could chop it while we're there, before azza can smile. I believe Lewwyn put a turn into that road before he had to retreat during the war.

we need to decide if we want to attack the barb with Achilleus. I've competed the turn otherwise, but can't end it until we decide what to do with it. well we still have 21 hours on the turn so no rush, but would love some input from the team wink.

here's an overview of what we have revealed of azza's territory so far, if that helps:

azza is researching mysticism atm because he has no method for producing culture outside of his capital.
His newest city is "the wombats." we can see its culture peeking in the south, revealed this turn by Odysseus. its SW, W of the clams there. if he settled it for copper it would be in that vicinity. but it doesnt look like we can reach that city by land without going through his capital.

Muse is an older city - you can see its culture peeking out a bit SW of Tenacious D. If I'm reading the culture correctly, I believe it lies SW, SW, W of Tenacious D.

Not that the water where the clams are (shared by Living end and Muse) is ocean/coast. This leads me to believe the land further south of Odysseus is a peninsula and will dead-end. This raises its own mysteries, though - Tencious D would have choked us off from the rest of the continent even before its first border pop. So if this is the only land connection, how did Serdoa get his scout up to us? I guess he could have declared war on Azza just to pass through, then made peace, but there's no way he could have safely passed by without ending the turn 1 square from tenacious D's city site - would Azza have just decided not to kill Serdoa's scout, but to let him go through?
I think its more likely there is a 2nd land connection, which hopefully Odysseus will reveal soon. we're still missing a lot of information, though.

I'm putting this here so I don't lose it, as a reference to interesting national epics for a future city:
http://www.authorama.com/national-epics-1.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shahnameh

"knights of the round table" (maybe "king arthur" for space requirements), "the Cid," "Song of Roland," "Don Quixote" are all works I'll use fairly soon. I'll use Divine comedy and paradise lost as well, but since they are religious epics not tied to a specific country, I'll probably try to use as many pagan epics like "Shahnameh" first. I'll save works from the past few centuries like "the Ulysseus" for the late game, if I can.

For the silver city, I want something that references norse mythology or the vikings. seems appropriate. having trouble finding anything, the best I can come up with is "the Eddas"
http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entr..._Mythology
would love input for the silver city though smile.

edit: I don't particularly like that the Eddas are not really native epics, but written by Christians later about norse mythology.
maybe either Nibelung or Volsung are better
http://www.worldhistoria.com/national-ep...24986.html

yeah I think I like Volsung for the silver city smile.

I actually prefer Azza build axes since they are 1 movers so I'm glad he got some copper. Iron is another thing altogether.

I think chariot should keep exploring and the other return home to let the barbs go unmolested.

I'm excited for silver. Staying on the wheat and rice is the correct call I think.

ok we decided to hold Achilleus in place, rather than attack the barbs or retreat. he can retreat to the gold mine ine 1 turn and to beowulf in less than a turn if needed.

Volsung (silver city) will be founded in 4 turns. gold and silver will be mined and roaded not long after that. which is good because we'll need the extra happy to grow grow grow our cities and recover our economy.

the new plan for build order in Beowulf (the border city) is spear (completing this turn)--> 1 turn axe from chops ---> overflow into archer --> granary -- >walls.

we also have a spear completing this turn in Gilgamesh and the odyssey. The gilgamesh spear won't reach the front by the time peace expires, but he'll make it there a turn later.

also, we get out 2nd village that can be shared by gilgamesh and the Iliad next turn smile.

ooh, I just noticed that spacetyrantxenu converted to buddhism. Serdoa founded buddhism, so he must have gotten a free spread. we can expect spacetyrant xenu to be somewhere south of azza and close to Serdoa, then. hopefully we'll be able to make contact with him soon. smile

also the barb city expanded its borders. funny, they built a monument 10 turns ago, azza is 2 turns away from being able to get any culture in any of his non-palace cities <G>. There's a sheep in the inner ring and rice in the BFC. barbs should have farming and probably AH by now, if they build a worker that city will be nice and juicy by the time we canpture it smile.
