First order of things is to make up an assignment so we can go out and have some fun.
It has been freezing cold around these parts for the last while, last night hit minus 20s with a wind chill/frost bite warning. I have been home-bounded only because I hate to leave the comfort and warmth of the house but fully aware I could be missing much photo opps of winter scenery. (except that morning last weekend you saw me up at 6 am in the morning going out to shoot a Xmas scene.)
So we can have an assignment based around winter (gets us out of the house). And, even to pick a winter theme such as "water"
Or, Still Life (if we want to stay indoors) +theme.
I think one assignment per month would be a reasonable pace to start with, but I can definitely handle more.
Lets throw some ideas around.

Well, the first thing that comes to my mind is that winter probably looks quite different in the various places where RB'ers live. So, keeping things open with something general might make it interesting in that it could show the different things that make it look like winter wherever we are.

Hi,

While I like the idea of unspecific, 'open' assignments, only giving a general theme like "winter" which leaves a lot of room for artistic interpretation/picture composition (for those people that, unlike me, actually have artistic talents ), I'd also like to see more specific assignments, like "a winter tree" or "fireworks". That would make all pictures submitted more similar, and thus easier to compare, to discuss and to learn from each other.
Given the general "winter" theme, one might submit a picture of a frozen lake, while I submit my winter tree. Now I can marvel at the frozen lake picture and try to find out why it looks more spectacular than my tree, but if the other person had submitted a tree as well, the different techniques would be easier to compare: Focus, picture composition (how far away from the tree was the other person compared to me?), etc.

Gris has a point, on this one. Some people on earth can't seem to agree on what seasons are all about. People down South seem to think that Winter means rain (Gris), or just a warm/semi hot BBQ season (Occhi). So while I am thinking icicles and frozen lakes when I say water and you are thinking snow capped bare branches when you say tree....
If we are going to stick with winter as the subject for our first round, it may be good to leave this one more general and just see what winter means for other RBers, which also serves as a nice intro to where we live.

Agreed. Maybe my examples were a bit misleading: What I meant was that I'd like to see a more specific assignment *sometimes* in the future, and not necessarily for the first RBP one. I just wanted to point out that some more specific assignments from time to time would be nice, for the reasons I gave. Apart from that, I'm looking forward to see some winter pictures from all over the world, although I don't know how I will react to pictures from people sunbathing on the beach under a blue sky, while I have to endure cold and rainy weather here at the moment...

Long ago, I had a conversation with a young man from Texas on the subject of our mutual homesickness. Both of us were in Athens, Greece and both of us had been away from home for longer than either of us had ever been before. We reviewed the people we missed and the amenities we missed and the foods we missed ....
And then he said something that took me aback. He said he would give anything to see those wide open ranges again. For the whole conversation, I had been picturing endless forests as the backdrop to all the other things I was missing.
I think a series of photographs on what 'winter' is for each of us would be a fine way to start exploring each other's worlds.

Ahh winter. Several months away and I'm not missing it one bit. I much prefer the January heat.

Good point. Maybe we need to make the assignment something like "January" or "February" since it's not currently winter for everyone here.

"Memory Lane" would let us achieve our objectives with our first assignment and make it even more intimate.
Memory Lane is NOT (just) about skyscrapers for the city folks or wide open mountain ranges for the country boy, nor is it about famous landmark in your locale.
Memory Lane is about places that have meaning to ourselves. It can be a place where we first met our love one(s), or where we and our love one like to go. It can be a park where we frequent with our family. It can be our old homestead, old elementry school. It can be a favorite rock up in the mountain somewhere, or a tree you planted in your backyard eon ago. Places you can put a decription on, with YOU in it.
As for my own little twist on the title, I am thinking what would look good in black and white. Not black and white for art's sake, but black and white as in what would look good/interesting as old photos - Those photos that we wish you would have taken before the landscape changed.
What do you think?
