That seems like way too much time to develop an attack. Do you have a warrior available to send out on a reconnaissance mission towards him? If you have a choke point somewhere with vision from a hill you could get a couple turns advanced warning if you think that there is a real threat of invasion.

Turn 69
![]() ![]() PANIC! ![]() ![]() PANIC! ![]() PANIC! ![]() ![]() PANIC! ![]() ![]() PANIC! ![]() Serdoa's power went up another 30k last turn. So lets just forget about Calendar and the MOM for the moment and figure out how we defend against this probable attack. If anyone wants to reassure me that he's not attacking and I should just get back to the MOM feel free... I'm afraid there is nothing that Steve the spearman can do to get sight on Thessalionika or the road (presumably via the corn). I have a warrior on a galley that could get around the south west of the city but I'd assume Serdoa's culture has spread far enough for that not to give me sight. So I'm going to offer open borders (which could even help me as I have a few trade routes that could be better). If he accepts I have a Buddhist missionary who can make good progress through his land. I may just get back on Calendar and the MOM... ![]() I think I'll research Archery this turn, get a lot of archers out, then Construction next turn, get a lot of cats, then go on to Calendar. I'm still going to make the two settlers I was planning, but I might use the forests that were going into the MOM to chop catapults. I've got a few units ready next turn - but with Archery it's only a power increase of 18000, not really a deterrant. ![]() Meanwhile Azza and Hydra have made peace and Azza is about to settle a new city 2NE of Jimmy. ![]() Side note amid all the panic - Azza's new city (previous pic) is the same tile labelled 4 chops in this one, but here there is no hill. That's the only non-mirrored tile I've seen so far, excluding forest growth. Is there some kind of random erosion game mechanic that I haven't heard of? ![]() Power ![]() Demos - Serdoa is almost double the rest of us on power. ![]()

I've seen the hill/flat thing before, the script throws those sometimes.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.
I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.
So it's not a carefully thought-out mechanic that SevenSprits spent hours agonizing over? How disappointing...

Turn 70
Archery! ![]() I've got good news and bad news - Serdoa rejected open borders and declared war on Hydra. There is no war weariness yet, but he took a very long time over playing his turn, so I might have to interrupt the paranoid ravings to resume normal service... ![]() I want to know a bit more about the war before going back to building, if I see some war weariness and units lost then the MOM plan is back on (note the two settlers completing this turn). I'm going to dump the overflow from Archery into Construction, so I can 1-turn it if need be, but meanwhile go for calendar. I'll be packing a lot of Archers into Exeter too, just for luck. ![]() Azza's running a pretty similar capital to me - I prefer mine because the water was a big boost to my economy before I had cottages up and running. Jimmy will head south west to the only place I think Serdoa and Hydra have a border to see how hot this war will really be. He'll take about 4 turns to get there though. ![]() Power - I hope Hydra has some plans for his defense. Even if it's falling back until he's got a force together to fight with. ![]() Demos

Turn 71
I didn't think I'd be getting a save today, it looked like Hydra had a lot of consultation about the war in his thread and hadn't played by my early evening, but he did and Azza and Serdoa played quick, so here I am, slightly drunk and wondering if I should be trying to take Serdoa's silver city off him whilst he's distracted? But no, Serdoa's soldier score continues to be ridiculous - he gained another 30k without even whipping. Hydra on the other hand looks to have whipped away a third of his pop this turn! No war-weary yet, so while it looks from forum behaviour as though Serdoa is throwing everything at Hydra I can't be sure. I can finish Construction in a turn if I've got 50 gold, so I'll carefully finish Calendar making sure I've got enough in the bank to switch back (except on t73, for reasons that should become apparent). So the MOM plan is still on, no-one has Calendar yet. I plan to settle Jarrow and Ipswich on t73 and you might be able to see my chopping plans if you zoom in on this pic - initials followed by the turn the chop comes in - the fast worker makes everything so easy! ![]() This might make more sense: ![]() Elsewhere I plan to complete a lighthouse and Moai Statues in Grimsby by t76. ![]() Azza now has a city on the sea between us, I'm sending the galley to check it out, after which I'd like to settle some more islands. ![]() Power ![]() Demos

Turn 72
Still no war weariness in the Serdoa - Hydra war, so I imagine the army either has to move three tiles through Hydra's culture or Serdoa is catapulting city defenses or it's all an elaborate double bluff and he's about to come after me [/paranoid mode]. Hopefully Jimmy can shed some light in the next couple of turns: ![]() All of which means I'm going to have to take a risk here - I'm completing Calendar this turn so I can start the MOM next turn and finish it eot75. But it means that construction will take two turns if Serdoa's stack appears next turn. ![]() I'll have two new settlers over the next three turns down here, I'm planning to settle A, then B. Although B is a bit aggressive, It does have a lot of forests and gets wine once borders pop. I think it'll take about 10-20 turns to flip the gold. Settling C is possible, but has less forests and doesn't share the rice with A. Settling 1N of B is more defensible, but loses the chance to flip the gold and a good grass forest. Eventually D will be a back-fill site. ![]() The second settler could head over here instead to settle another island, I'd probably go for E rather than F as Creative Azza will swamp F in 20 turns. G isn't much use before optics... ![]() Power ![]() Demos - including another 30000 soldiers for Serdoa this turn - I'm building some more archers...

Turn 73
Just a quickie without pics - there is still no bloodshed between Hydra and Serdoa, three turns into the war, which I find increasingly suspicious. I can get construction in two turns, at which point I'm going to embark on an enormous catapult army. As well as building the MOM. If Serdoa doesn't then come for me I'll have to think about attacking his silver city, but that's a little while off yet... I've offered open borders again to see if he'll let me scout him. No chance...
