novice lived through this in pbem17, although to be fair we were only on par in development through acts of villainy alright. They had the Pyramids and The Great Lighthouse but once the FIN cottage economy got rolling (with Kremlin) they had a hard time keeping up despite superior civ skills. It makes a bloody victory more attractive...leverage what advantages our traits give us before they evaporate.

I am not sure drafted Rifles will be good enough, but if so we need to start stockpiling Catapults as well.

If I remember correctly, Novice was running full Specialist economy in that game so not really comparable to this. Nevertheless being non-Financial is significant handicap for our late game economy. To overcome this we've been collecting wonders and tried to grab more land than our fair share. I think we've done alright and have good chance to be competitive also late game. If we want to be aggressive either towards Gillette or TEAM we need to secure ally (pirates or 3M depending on the direction) and tie other top contender to a long NAP while warring. Not sure we can accomplish this so preparing for defending our land seems way to go at the moment.

Upon reflection I'm starting to like the idea of getting gunpowder after liberalism and spending 5 turns in nationalism drafting 18 muskets. That should give us some nice leverage diplomatically, and the draft anger should wear off by the time we're ready to draft rifles.

The main problem would be happiness. But we get +1 from forges, +1 from religion, can whip markets, can get monarchy and hook wines, and before long get optics and hook whales (also boosted by markets). We also get +2 from barracks while in nationalism, should we decide to stay there.

I also suspect that we pretty much had to take those drafting rounds to get army of reasonable size. Gunpowder is not totally nescessary. Maces are almost as good as muskets. Depends on timings though. We probably can get Macinery, PP and gunpowder so that most of our drafts could be muskets. For happiness purposes we could try to get that Engineering wonder (can't remember name now). Especially if we have Engineered Taj i.e. Head to Engineering instead gunpowder or Optics after PP.

Since we're not looking to smash someone's face in, and only to defend, and probably people will be fielding around Mace/Musket levels, Maces should suffice if we need to draft them. Gunpowder obv should be on the line eventually, but my poor intuition says Muskets aren't a good neough upgrade to be pivotal in our plans. Esp since they don't get metal upgrades.

If we do start drafting, going on the attack may well become an option.

It may not be worth the tech detour, though.

I like the idea of engineering and Notre Dame, btw. Both for road movement, pikes, and happiness.

In any case I think we'll be in a good position to negotiate when/if we get nationalism and the Taj. Extend the NAP, or we start drafting...

I'd say we draft for defense, not for pre-emptive smashy. We are lined up way better for a peaceful snowball imo.

I still feel like muskets will have a longer shelf life, and they are particularly good when the enemy can't take pinch. But this is definitely not my area of expertise. Speaking of drafting, though: where do we put the globe?

Muskets are bit better, but we would be delaying other quite useful things because of them. In defense their utilisation would be pretty close to each other. We need cats for wearing down the stack and in mob up duty they're pretty close in value. On sitting duck defense that we hopefully don't need to utilise much, Muskets are clearly better, but Knights won't get very good odds against cities that have high cultural walls. If I would had to to choose between Gunpowder and Machinery+bulbed PP I choose latter and continue towards Engineering from there.
