Diplomacy Master Thread- Helping Your Opponents Beat Themselves

(February 21st, 2013, 23:47)Merovech Wrote: How about something along these lines:

"Hey,

Unfortunately, we have a bit of trouble understanding your last few messages. Since we have a few members on our team that can speak Spanish, we thought we would try communicating with you guys that way. [Insert diplo message here].

Let the parties continue,
Team Realms Beyond"

In Spanish:

"Hola,

Desafortunadamente, tenemos unos pocos problemas cuando tratamos sus [vuestros*] mensajes recientes. Porque algunos de nuestros miembros hablan español, piensamos comunicar con ustedes [vosotros] en esa manera. [Insert diplo message here].

Ojalá que las fiestas sigan,
Team Realms Beyond"

Perfect! Now send the message yourself, and add a line that says "I'm merovich, I can be the diplomat for your team if you like" or some such.
Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you.

Ugh don't need that, don't overthink it, just shoot the shit with these guys. They've lost, they're Playing For Fun, so make it fun for them.

that was exactly my point, how does merovich's message not do this? Merovich can call himself a "party correspondent" instead of diplomat, if you wish wink

I'm fine with your suggestion, Bigger. I am pretty unsure what I should put as our actual diplo message, however. What do we want to tell/ask them besides "what did you mean in your last message?" (which is, now that I think about it, probably sufficent if we do not have anything else to say). Also, I want scooter's approval first, since he is our chief diplomat.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

My diplo guidelines:

  1. Keep it simple.
  2. Do not make assumptions.
  3. Do not make fun of other teams unless you want to make an enemy.
Furthermore, I consider that forum views should be fluid in width

I still think any message that has anything along the lines of "we didn't get it" is a mistake smile.

We have no plans for war currently, but we need to protect ourselves. We currently have a neighbor that is refusing a longer term NAP while whipping in military buildings and teching military techs, so we're concerned that they have plans to attack us.

I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

I guess we got their attention with our last message. Good. Now he'll have to take time out of his very busy schedule to do some actual diplo.

CivPlayers Wrote:Hey scooter,

Sorry for delay, I am really busy irl. Just droped by to tell you this. I'll write you when I have the time since I don't want to let any of my subordinates take over meanwhile. Try not to interpret my delay in any other way.

Best regards,

Decebal

CivPlayers Wrote:Greetings Scooter,

I hope we can agree on the following: as I said previously turn 110 NAP is fine. Also, starting from then, NAP is considered valid unless denounced with 10 turns in advance. (i.e: that means one side can attack the other no sooner than T120 smile ) We would also like to use the land between our nations. As you have very well pointed out, that land is rubbish, so there shouldn't be anything to negociate for, right?

Regarding the OB, I'm still working on that. The 2 workers were merely a suggestion, I'm open for anything that would show us your good will and that would give me a leverage into trying to convince our High Council to sign the agreement.

Since you have started out the military discussion, I feel obligated to continue them as questions arise in our War Ministery. You do have, as you have kindly pointed out, one of the largest armies in the world. Do you plan any attacks in the future? Can we get involved as part of that plan, would it give it any added value? Could we count on you for any military actions?

I look forward to hearing your answer. If you feel that there are things that we should discuss directly, I will try to make time in my busy schedule. Just let me know.

Best wishes,

Decebal

Seriously, given the tone of Decebal's messages, I get the feeling that he might actually be pressed for time and that he may be over-committed in terms of how much time he can spend on diplo and this game. This comes across to us entirely as stalling in an email, so a chat may give us a better feel for whether or not he really is truly hurried in writing messages, or, as we suspect, stalling us. I hope he's just been busy, but I'm not convinced. Scooter, work your magic. At least now we have their attention. Score one each for Realpolitik and muscle flexing. goodjob

Yeah, also nice timing considering it is the turn before we land HG. Nice to get some of these diplo things set before our runaway status becomes blatantly obvious.
