Correct, that's quite impressive (note that if at the end Nxe5 then Bb4+). Did you find that without looking in a database? What's your Elo?

@Novice
Your basic strategic idea of playing f6 is correct. See if you can make it work without any knight moves as preparation.

@Pindicator
That's the correct strategical idea, however preparing the break this way loses time which White can use to castle. Look for a more forceful approach.

It's f6 straight away?
If Bxe6+, Kh8 then white's center looks like it's falling apart.

I haven't worked out the Bxd5 or Bxd7 lines, but if the bishop just retreats in the diagonal it came from then black can dismantle white's center

Thanks, but to be fair, I hadn't worked out the Bxd5 line before deciding that f6 was the correct move. I was aware of the thematic f6 break in the french and everything else looked too slow, so I was pretty sure that f6 was correct - even though I didn't have anything concrete in mind. At that point, it was simply a matter at looking at white's possible moves and hoping to find a response that didn't look horrible for black, and solved the problems I found in my initial assessment.

On a different account, I reached 1700 on chess.com, so nothing that special. I tend to do a bit better on tactical puzzles than in real games.

Congrats on (nearly) 5000 posts! Just a few more than I have made tongue

TBH I think some of these games could have been resigned earlier by the losing side due to being a rook+ down with no compensation.

At our level sometimes you can pull that back depending on the rest of the board. Although I admit there are a few games where I am not sure why we are playing on

@Pindicator:
That's correct, try working out the 1...f6 2.Bxe6+ Kh8 3.Bxd5 variation.

@uberfish: No, I am just a patzer who has watched a few more chess videos than the rest of the players here. wink
IMHO to be a serious tournament player you should have a rating around 2000 and to reach that level you need a coach and a lot of effort.

Playing a random game atm against a low ranked oponent, and all his moves have been really passive. He is going nowhere near the centre and making no attacks.

Wierdly enough I am finding it really difficult to play against. I am so used to developing while trying to address theats that given an open board I have no idea what to do!

(Went for 1.e4, 2.d4, 3.c4, 4.f4 then started to struggle for ideas)

Depending on the defense, c4 and especially f4 may have been the wrong idea. After e4 and d4 you have two bishops with nice open lines and your opponent will have a hard time getting either of his bishops going. That is part of the advantage of getting those center pawns out early. But two moves later your bishops are blocked in somewhat by your pawns and you still haven't moved a piece. If you don't have an obvious plan of attack, try to get your knights and bishops active with room to move influencing the center of the board.

Well hey there I have actually not lost a few games!!! A draw with azza and a likely draw with Kuro and I'm gunning for 7th baby!!! lol

jkaen: if you're pushing central pawns against a weak and passive opponent the ultimate goal is to back up the front line with pieces and eventually take the d6/e6 square which makes it very difficult for them to maneuver
