If sooooo gets that far south with his army, then I have lost the war. I am planning on a blocking city in North to seal in sooooo smile. I just need to scout out that area and pick a good city site.

Edit: Based on what Dreylin said - I better get over their quick smart before sooooo settlers a bunch more cities in our direction.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Quote:Hey Ruff,

Just a quick (loaded) question: what's your timing on settling Death Valley?

Sooooo has a Worker roading in that direction...

Dreylin II.

I am not completely sure where my sooooo blocking city is going (haven't mapped there yet) so I will be sending a settler into unknown territory to try and found a city that blocks him. I only hope that I can do it. I opened my WB game with the information I have and I have to build some roads to speed my settler on his way. Here is a marked up screenshot ...

red dots are settler movement tiles, green circles are tiles that need roading.

Turn 1
 • Settler starts at capital (I really shouldn't have been starting a library - too many single player games)
 • Western worker moves to flood plain, 1 turn of cottage
 • Eastern Worker mines grassland hill (3)
 • LQ chariot (2)

Turn 2
 • more production into Settler
 • Western worker moves to grassland, 1 turn of road
 • Eastern Worker moves to grassland and starts road
 • LQ chariot (1)

Turn 3
 • Double whip Settler
 • Western worker completes road
 • Eastern Worker completes road - hooking up LQ
 • LQ completes chariot - goes to cover roading worker
 • LQ starts axeman
 • warrior at LQ upgraded to axe - sent to sooooo blocking city

Turn 4
 • Settler starts race, red dot 1
 • FF starts axe
 • Western worker moves to to forest, road
 • Eastern Worker returns to grassland hill
 • LQ building axe

Turn 5
 • Settler - red dot 2
 • Western worker completes road on forest
 • Eastern Worker mines grassland hill (2)
 • FF & LQ building axes

Turn 6
 • Settler - red dot 3
 • Western worker moves to forest hill
 • Eastern Worker mines grassland hill (1)
 • FF & LQ building axes

Turn 7
 • Settler - red dot 4
 • Western worker starts road
 • Eastern Worker completes grassland hill mine - 20 hammers into axe

Turn 8
 • Western worker completes road
 • Settler - red dot 5

Turn 9
 • Western worker moves to plain - roads
 • Settler - red dot 6 and then starts to look for some place to settle

I will be upgrading a warrior to an axe (59g) as well as sending chariot and another axe out of LQ. I will try and grow LQ to size 4 so that I can double whip an 2 axes out of there too. I am pretty sure that I will need a good size holding when I found this city.

I'll check how long archery will take me too.

a couple of replies to Dreylin's email ...

Quote:Damn. I want to settle a city North of Death Valley (and I am going with that name) to block sooooo but I would bet that he is planning to settle in that direction too. I'm assuming he thinks he has plenty of time to settle around his capital.

The quickest I can get a settler out is about 3 turns and he will take at least 8 or 9 turns to get into position. That is too long. I'll start roading towards my sooooo blocking site now to speed up the settlement date.

It will be a race.

Quote:Dreylin,

I just checked in my world builder version of the game and with suitably placed roads, I think I can have a settler in position in 7 turns after finishing him. I'll have to send some military too, so it might take slightly longer than that - going to have to apply the whip.

This is going to be close. I wonder if sooooo will declare on me?

Quote:Another reply ...

I can have a settler in the area 2 tiles NE of the Death Valley (3 tiles NE of Northern Spice) in 9 turns. This is the best I can do. I can see that tile (it is a plains hill) but that is as far North as I have mapped. I will try and run my returning scout(s) up there to map it out, but is there a good city location that blocks sooooo that you can see?

I will also be looking at my cities to see how many units I can send along to hold that site - I am pretty sure that this will annoy sooooo a little.

Quote:Ruff,

Using the Northern Spices as reference, sooooo will finish a road next
turn on a flatland forest tile 4E, 6N.

That tile is in his borders - the SSW corner of a BFC. It's had a
border pop, but I don't know if it's his Capital or a blocker city.

It's a pretty hilly area, but the best place to put a defensive
blocker would be either 1N or the spot you suggested, or 1NE - i.e.
4NE of the Spices - both hills that overlook flatland. The first would
have a single tile border fight, the Eastern of the two would overlap
2t. The absolute best place for an offensive blocker would be the hill
3E, 5N of the Spices - i.e. 1tile SW of the roading Worker & thus
sooooo's borders. That, I'm sure would piss him off. Of the three,
only the 4NE blocks him completely before border pop.

The only resource in the area is Copper 5E, 4N from Spices.

If soooooo grants me open borders next turn, I should be able to give
you more info.

Dreylin.
Sounds confusing - I suppose it will be clearer when I de-fog the area.

Quote:Thanks for this information. It will prove useful in about 7 or 8 turns from now. I will also be trying to send about 4 or 5 axes to this city location - then it is a matter of waiting 5 turns for a border pop. Sooooo will be putting out 2cpt from his city - any chance of a missionary for sooooo blocking city so that I can match that cultural output (Stonehenge monument + religion)?

Ruff

Another thing to consider is that this might wreck my tech trade with sooooo - depending on how he takes me settling this blocking city.

Forgot to mention it yesterday, but trade routes won't be as big on this map as in the Poly demogame: it's a single landmass, so no intercontinental routes.

Hey - looking at my settler rush plan, I think I can do better.

Eastern worker ...
moves to grassland 1NE of corn - roads
roads
moves to plain, 1 W of capital - roads
roads
... meanwhile, for the settler ...
 1. settler started in capital
 2. settler building
 3. settler whipped
 4. settler ready to move (worker has completed 2 roads by then - can reach 2nd red dot)
 5. 3rd red dot
 6. 4th red dot
 7. 5th red dot
 8. 6th red dot
... and for the Western worker ...
 1. move to tile 1W of floodplain, road
 2. road
 3. move to forest, road
 4. road
 5. move to forest hill
 6. road
 7. road
