WB Whosit! Funny I was just talking about you with Gaspar a few days ago!
I am in fact quite new here at Realms Beyond, but it looks like an interesting and pleasant community you have here. I was drawn here by reading Sulla's page about Civ4, and being a fan of the game myself I thought I would make an account here and maybe try a few of the RB style civ games. I would say I am still relatively inexperienced at the game, but I enjoy improving and this looks like a go community to do so in.
Also, if there are any TotalWar.org people here, you would know me as Nightbringer.
Hey, I think I've played some mafia with you in the ORG gameroom. Welcome! Check the Gaming table if your interested in any playing any Werewolf mafia here.

...y'know, that's funny. I have a horrible habit of looking for places to say "hi everybody, pay attention to me" and yet I missed this thread entirely.
Oh, well, it's only been four months; that's still n00b territory, right?

Hello Viqsi, welcome to Realms Beyond. However I can't shake the feeling that I've met you before.
Travelling on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.
Hello RB! I've just discovered the joy and wonder of Civ 4, thanks to a friend who pointed me towards it when I griped on Facebook about Civ 5 being uninteresting. It's consumed my free time over the last week and a half, and through the magic of Google found my way to this community, which I knew I'd like the moment I saw a Vernor Vinge quote in a signature. I've read through a lot of the PBEM/PB game threads and hope to play in one someday . I assume I should stalk Civ General Discussion for organization threads?
As a newbie to Civ 4, not just RB, I was wondering if there existed good on-ramps. I've managed to beat the AI on Monarch (woo!), but I pretty much just hunkered down in a corner of the world, built buildings and tile improvements that seemed okay (mine hills, farm plains, cottage grassland and FP was my algorithm), and raced to space while the AI warred amongst themselves. I can't seem to do well in early game without the free culture from Creative, just barely had enough cities to build Oxford, and don't know ANYTHING about how to conduct a war. Also, I've only played the base game because BTS's new systems are intimidating. Recommendations?
Thanks for making such a good community, and I look forward to gaming with you!

Welcome to RB! Yeah, Sullla and T-Hawk's reports are great: High-level play combined with detailed and entertaining reporting. Sullla has a lot of reports at garath.net/sullla
The civfanatics forums are also pretty good for single player questions, advice, and reports.
The tournament report section for the RB forums also has a large selection of single player reports
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.
1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.
2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.
3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.
4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.
Welcome Sisu!
I think there's a bit of difference in learning SP techniques and MP ones. A lot of basics, like good city management, cross over, but the timings and unit needs really vary between the two. So if you're interested in SP, joining a succession game is a great way to learn. Except i'm not sure how easy it is to get into one at CivFanatics any more. If not then maybe we could get a learner game going here. For MP, i would suggest teaming up with someone when a new game opens. Teaming with luddite in pbem23 was a great learning tool for when i began playing MP

Just wanted to note this, games here are played exclusively with BTS at this point. I don't think i've seen a base Civ4 MP game here, and you'd probably have to go pretty far back to find an adventure or succession game that plays with base.
