The burning question is how to settle these islands. We might want to grab a city on the northern island, too. 2E of the clams would claim the whole southern tip. Or we could hurry up and settle that spot on the northern tip of the southern island, i.e. 2W of the clams. Of course it's much more defensible to settle on the west coast of those islands. So once again, I find myself wanting a galley in the northern sea, instead of the southern sea.

Here is what I landed on:

That galley in Comoros can be 2-whipped when the city grows to 4, potentially overflowing into another galley with a chop, if we want to get aggressive. Meanwhile, the axe in Estonia can be completed in two turns with a chop. The capital can potentially 2-turn an axe after its settler. Either way, we can settle one city to grab clams/ivory/copper, or maybe two cities. One on the southern tip to share fish and dyes, and one city 3N of that. That would give us two productive offshore cities very fast, and we'll get a third on the western island (Brunei is working on that). Getting to three offshore cities ASAP is a priority, to max out our trade route income. Settling north also has the advantage that we can support those northern island cities with a good city in the gems area. The southern mainland is less appealing.

Our demographics look good... if we compare them to Boldly and Dazed.

Here is the dotmap I was considering. 1 could also go another tile north, I guess. Settling on the east coast feels to aggressive. Better to just have the threat of forting through the island later.

Our workboat found a mountain in the western sea, and Boldly's scout peeking into our empty capital finally shamed us into building a military unit.

Looks like it's about time, too. (I.e. quite possibly too late. cry)

Novice had 72k power last turn. Keep in mind, that graph is lagging one turn behind; it rose again to 89k this turn, presumably after he completed two more phalanxes. His three workers on our border left, without finishing their minechop. Not quite sure what to make of that.

The gravity of the power situation didn't fully dawn on me when I played the turn, but I did at least hold off on finishing Pottery so we have more gold on hand. We don't urgently need that tech, as our workers aren't scheduled to build any cottages just yet.

APART from the 53k power deficit, the demographics are looking up. bang

Your builds are as by the screenshot or did you change something?

They were as shown. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt...

Played the next turn, too. Novice added another 3 phalanxes to his power. I'm pretty much screwed, as I can't keep up with his buildup.

I'll settle west instead. Either on the deer island, or on this newly discovered one:

He's moved his workers back up and completed the mine.

Boldly's scout disappeared. He probably moved it next to Estonia and then deleted it when he saw my axe.

No you're not. Defence is stronger in this game, even with less units - certainly strategically, also tactically if collateral damage isn't involved. Am I right?

Just whip into oblivion. He will waste hammers on army which won't conquer anything and you will be praised for your glorious defence of your nation!

@Kurumi

If your nation lies in shambles it isn't really helping, even if some lurkers will praise you for it, just because their bloodlust was satisfied wink

@zak

I think taking into account the time it takes him to walk up to you when he is in your borders, you should be able to build up enough troops. He will need at least 2 Axes for every one you have, if he attacks that hill city more like 3 Axes. And even if he has enough to take it, his losses would be so horrendous that he won't be able to press on afterwards imo if you also keep up building.
