Go TEAM go! Maybe Trolls is reaching the same point against TEAM we reached against them--how many cities did Trolls end up taking?

You can check if M3 is in a golden age via the event log wink

No idea where to put HE :/

Colossus was a way to leverage our Oracle-Metal Casting plan--we researched Calendar late, and there was no way we could have known about SFL until we researched Calendar :/

Sure, we can research Monotheism (I don't even think it'll cost a turn on Astro), but I'm not sure we want to invest in Philosophy right now--how many turns is it?

Hey guys smile I'm reading up and enjoying the reads immensely. Thanks for letting me join smile

Edit: I have no idea where the attachments to this post comes from as I certainly didn't put them in here :P According to tapatalk I've attached three images and some files, apparently.. *confused*
As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master. - Commissioner Pravin Lal, "U.N. Declaration of Rights"

Hey Caledorn, yeah, very odd attachments, I suspect they are for something highly addictive that will suck you in and ruin your life!

I have a feeling you know your way around a pitboss so feel free to log in, but try not to change anything... it may not be obvious but there is a secret intelligence operating behind everything we do!

Hi Caledorn, welcome to Team Gillette and Realms Beyond! I'm happy to see you here!

Turn 156

A second Troll city falls (I think it was somewhere in the middle of the screen).

Uncovered a few more M3 cities - their military seems pretty light...

A little more visible this turn, next turn the explorer will really start uncovering land.

Work starts on the Globe and the National Epic and we'll need a serious dot-map for all our settlers! Heroic epic in Jemmy or Katana to push Troll culture back (a little) or in Dirk for quick naval units?

On tech our path looks like
Astro -> Paper -> Printing Press -> Education -> Sci Meth -> Alphabet -> Philo -> Liberalism -> Communism.

Anyone got any contrary suggestions?

TEAM and Trolls are still whipping/drafting, so hopefully this war will continue. Slowly.

A quick thing, you need alphabet before printing press--I'll look at the report a bit more closely later.

Good spot. How about Printing Press vs Education - We'll get one of them near the start of our golden age - is it worth doing education first so we get oxford in Occam sooner? or does the +1 village/town commerce from PP outweigh it?

M3's military must be somewhere--they have about the same as TEAM, and TEAM is not completely rolling over to Trolls--are they attacking Pirates?

I like Astro -> Alphabet -> Paper -> Printing Press -> Education -> Philosophy -> Liberalism -> Scientific Method -> Communism--as an alternative, how long would it take to get to Economics? (assuming the Merchant is still there)

If you're going to debate PP vs Edu first, you'll need to do a serious calculation--keep in mind we already have to build a lot of Observatories as well, along with all the support for SFL.

Hard maths coming up:

Printing press affects towns and villages, Occam has 16 of these, BOG will get to perhaps five at some point, nowhere else has more than two or three...

In Occam at our current break even 50% the 16 extra commerce makes
8 * 1.5 (bureau bonus) * 2.10 (building bonus after the observatory) = 25 beakers
8 * 1.5 (bureau bonus) * 1.5 (building bonus) = 18 gold per turn
Adding another 10 for the rest of the empire makes about 50 beakergold per turn

Education is going to let us build a university in (200 hammers/20 hpt = ) 10 turns, then Oxford in another 10 turns. (Could be quicker with golden age production).
At that point the bonus of 125% for the two buildings will add to the regular income at break even of (about 80 commerce = 150 beakers per turn) to give a bonus of 100 beakers.

So education gets us a bigger reward approx 20 turns later, while PP gets us a smaller reward immediately. PP is 1000 beakers and commerce better over those 20 turns, after which it takes Education about another 20 turns to break even. (10 if we run 100% science for those turns).

What this exercise tells me is that we've got waaaay too few cottages away from Occam. banghead

Based on those numbers my gut says we want to get Education first, and break even on tech by t190 so if we go:
Astro -> Paper -> Education -> Philosophy (for GA pacifism) -> Alphabet -> PP
then we don't miss out too much on the PP bonus, also we can switch off tech and save gold until Oxford is built to give us a better ratio and pay off the opportunity cost quicker... Is there a negative to saving gold during a golden age?

After that Liberalism -> Sci Meth -> Communism here we come!

Of course if the Economics Great Merchant is still available after we tech Education we can get it in 7 turns (break-even) but I doubt it will be. We can also bulb Printing Press if In The Stone can produce a great scientist during the golden age. Bear in mind though that our holdings on Smoothfoundland are going to be a drag on the economy, until they get courthouses and Forbidden Palace.

What have I missed?

Turn 157

Exploration begins in earnest. We can finish Astro in two turns with around 150 gold. I believe each galley-galleon upgrade will cost 110 gold, we will have four settlers ready to get on galleons at either end of our coastline, so we really want two ships, but I could see an arguement for making the northern one first rather than sandbagging Collossus - the cities by Trolls are the important ones to get settled. There again its the later cities that are going to cut Trolls off, so maybe it's the settlers that are the limiting factor?
Edit: After the turn rolled it looks like we can complete Astro eot 158 with 229 gold in the bank... Should we?

I think a city on the silver deer island to the north is pretty obvious - plenty of forests to chop and food galore. We have workers available on In The Stone's island to take with that settler. Then the question on Smoothfoundland proper is: Do we take up as much room as possible to hinder Trolls when they get Astro? Or do we settle densely to get better lines of communication if war does break out on SFL? We also need to settle our first few cities with first-ring resources as we won't have Caste System artists for border pops until t166 (ish).

This is a very preliminary dotmap attempt - more info will come over the next three turns. I've spread the cities out a bit - making it hard for anyone else to get a foothold. If we continue to cover the western coast with our culture it makes it very hard for Trolls (who asked us to leave their land recently) to settle anything. The basic image is a Paint.net file that you can muck about with to your hearts content! Alternatively just shout up/down/left/right.

Anyhow, we need a lot of workers and work boats over here, which is fine as we still don't have the OR building bonus, so I'm happy to keep building units in most places!

Smooth could whip a settler or worker to speed the Globe - perhaps once it's got enough food to regrow straight away?

Power

And this turn Trolls have 893 gold and are saving 76gpt...
