I would recommend new people read all of the State of the Empire threads (make sure to set the view settings to all threads from the start of the forum), then the turnplayer threads, than the operation threads. But just readings the State of the Empire plus the last few pages of turnplayer threads will give you an idea of what is going on.

(EDIT: At some point) I'll make a thread with a 1-page summary for a really broad overview, but don't expect a lot of pretty screenshots.
