Things may effectively become riskier for the Spaniards.

Well, does this imply that they are going to attack the spanish too?

Sounds that way. This also implies to me that they are well aware of CFC's intentions and are probably working closely with CFC.

Oh that hadn't crossed my mind. Maybe I can find Yuufo on chat and figure that out. That would be really good to know.

edit: crossposted with kjn, good point. I may still ask and see what they know.

I'm far from sure Univers plans to join in. The Spanish and Univers has a longish sea between them. Going west of the sea would mean they'd have to attack a city by the border with CFC, and going east would be a looong way around. I think they have looked at the geopolitical situation and the treaties, and come to the same conclusion as we did, or that they signed some sort of treaty with CFC so CFC could have a secure northeastern flank.

And I really doubt they plan a naval invasion over the sea - they have only two cities by it (Routedurum and Quorum), and Quorum is quite immature.

Ok, caught UCiv on chat:

Chat with UCiv Wrote:scooter: Hey Yuufo, you around by any chance?
Yuufo: Yes!
scooter: hey! first, thanks for the reply. I guess the spanish team may be in a little bit of trouble over there then!
you guys gonna pile on? smile
Yuufo: I m not 100% sure the Spaniards are the target, but who else if not?
we won't attack them, no
will you?
scooter: nah, they are too far away for us to have any sort of involvement, we will have to be spectators it seems
Yuufo: maybe you plan another war?
scooter: but yes, it seems they are CFC's target
we're keeping options open of course! we have many neighbors
Yuufo: so long we aren't in these "options" :D
scooter: well we are quite far away from you so I think we should not have to worry about each other smile. though if you want, we could sign a NAP with you just to be safe
scooter: what do you think of your neighbors by the way? we have a theory that two of them may be working very closely together - CFC and Apolyton
Yuufo: why not, I am not sure it is really necessary but I'll ask my team
scooter: okay, yeah just send us an email and let me know what you think!
Yuufo: okay
about neighbors... they talk a lot and i ve got too little time frown sad i'm the only one with decent english in the team
scooter: Ah, that does make it hard
Yuufo: okay i'll tell my team
and I'll try to be more active on dipl
diplo
scooter: okay great! I've been trying to stay logged into this account more often lately, so I should be available if you ever need a quick response
Yuufo: okay

Comments:
1) I was mostly interested to see it doesn't sound like they're all that close with CFC. Or anyone really. Just one guy on the team who speaks good English and he doesn't have much time for it explains most of their issues.
2) They're not piling on
3) The NAP offer is fairly inconsequential. To me, it's mostly just confirmation that they won't be sending a bunch of random units at us in a dogpile. So I think we can guess they probably have 0 involvement, and if they actually accept a NAP, we can know we're safe from their involvement completely. (if they accept, we'll clarify no unit gifting and all that)

So I feel slightly less paranoid about these guys.

EDIT: I noticed when I first posted it, gchat stripped out the smilies when I pasted it. This is a little trivial, but I edited those in as it does make minor differences in the "tone" of a few of the messages

Great work. goodjob Sign them up to as long of an NAP as they'll accept. We have no quarrel with UniversCiv, and the fewer potential dogpilers out there, the better. I would sign NAP for 100 turns if they would accept it right now.

Nice. Realistically, we benefit most by using this team as a trading partner and a potential counterweight to other adversaries in that part of the world. If they haven't been doing much diplo and Yuufo is up to doing more, we could become good allies. If nothing else, information sharing about other teams. But good news for sure that they aren't piling on the Spaniards or sending units halfway around the world to us. thumbsup

Do we have any francophone on the team?

For that matter, once we have an extra spice from Neue Wolfratshausen, I think it might be a good idea to toss it towards Univers in exchange for OBs and goodwill. If teams gets happy resources from us it puts them at a double disincentive from declaring on us - they lose out on commerce and gets a happy hit.

Good idea to consider once we have that spice under our control. Realistically, we're more likely to develop a friend in a team that is a non-contender. UCiv is not completely hopeless like the Spanish team is, but they definitely aren't likely to have the win aspirations of a CFC or CivFr. Given our top dog status, developing a couple smaller friends/vassals (like we basically have in WPC) is really helpful just because it narrows the pool of potential dogpilers.

What about telling Germans about alliance with WPC and declaring war soon? Would that make them move some units to WPC borders?
We would also sound honest...
