I more get the feeling that they are opportunistic, and wants to keep their options open in the near term - I think they've seen the writing on the wall with the CFC-Spanish war and our war with the Germans. We should keep a decent force in the west, though, if nothing else to keep CivPlayers from trying to grab any of the forcibly vacated German city spots.
The one thing I'm most worried about is their reply on the trade proposal. "definitely are not interested" is too strongly worded a decline, though that may very well be due to English being his second language.

Given that he said they're not interested because they're about to secure their own source, that doesn't seem to be too much of a concern IMO.

"Have both soon" doesn't necessarily imply a native source - they might already have a trade lined up. But we should know within a few turns.

To me it sounds like CFC was having a chat with them, with the number 175 cropping up a lot. Yes there are two wars going on atm (us v the Boche is on despite the lack of declarations), but their talk of seeing what happens reads to me as, "CFC have proposed something interesting. We want to know if they are serious. We'll give you a proper answer on turn 178 or so."
I think they're pulling a Mussoluni, see how the war is going then decide on the likely winners

Well, we know of no other team with known access to spices (bah, someone from CFC has been logged in for hours now, and I can't connect to his computer...), and no spice within easy reach of CFC, so I doubt it's them. I think either CivPlayers has access to a source of their own, or they're going to get it from some other team.

D'oh! Just noted that CivPlayers has a source of spices within their land, not connected yet but it's probably only a matter of a few more turns.
We'll have to get our sugar craving fix from someone else.

My initial thought was yep they're coming after us. I'm not so sure though after thinking about it. He does say he thinks he will be able to answer us before T160, which I think is fair enough. I think us declaring war on GWT will open them up a bit.

Actually, I'm wrong. They're waiting to see how successful CFC is in their war. CFC has offered them to get in on a war against us. However, CivPlayers needs to be sure that CFC actually gets their Spanish war over with quick enough to turn around, heal, and line up to hit us. If CFC falters, they will back out. If CFC knifes through the Spanish team without much trouble, they're in.
That has to be it, right? I think Brian Shanahan is close in that they're waiting, but they aren't waiting to see how CFC does against us, they're waiting to see if CFC does well enough against Zulu to be ready in time for T175. Which is why he figures they'll know the answer by T160.

I really doubt CivPlayers plan to attack us. They probably have an attack plan, but they don't plan to execute it yet, if that's understandable.
Right now they're cramped by us and CivFr, but we managed to get an agreement to not settle marginal land against each other, so we have avoided close borders and culture wars so far. Their borders with CivFr appear to be more contested. We also have far too much power for anyone to want to mess with us right now.
I think they're watching and biding their time right now. If CFC has executed a successful war against the Spanish, and we still are mired in German land, then I think the risk for them joining in is high.
But if the opposite happens, then I think they will keep away. I think they're quite aware that of the three possible "dogpilers", they are the ones that are most vulnerable to us - CFC has a quite narrow front, and Apolyton is past the German lands.

The danger, of course, is we have one city that will be hard to defend, no matter what. BbB will fall if they commit a large enough force to it.
