Not in a hurry for a new computer

Win8 on ARM is called WinRT and is so far a big meh. Big difference, obscured by the crap job our marketing department is doing.

Okay so the desktop and a few things might be different or difficult/confusing to learn on Win 8. That shouldn't matter much if I live inside programs anyways, right?

And according to wikipedia Windows 8.1 is scheduled for release in late 2013 and, according to Microsoft, will change "key aspects" of how Windows 8 is used, including the reinstatement of the Start button. So there's half a chance things will get better. Actually, there's also notes on 8.1 but they don't mean nothing to me without having worked with it.

The most important things for Win8 is to map every single application to desktop apps and get used to both the start screen combo breaking (not as much of an issue with the search charms bar in 8.1) and using the keyboard shortcuts (most efficient ways to doing stuff).

KoP, IMHO the best way to think of Windows 8 is if the existing Windows desktop and all system functionality lived inside a single app on [your preferred phone OS of choice]. So everything is still technically there, it's just behind one more layer. The benefit is it's easier to navigate a phone OS (or Windows 8's 'Metro' skin) via touch and quicker to get access to some programs/see some info. The cost is it's harder to do anything else.

Win 8.1 will be marginally better for existing hardware (it will be much better for both ultra-high dpi displays and Haswell mobile chips) and the 'return of the start' button is almost a practical joke. The new start button actually takes you out of the desktop and back into the Metro UI. It's basically "Start...using the PC the way we want you to."

Okay then, it's not like I'd be making a huge mistake by going with Win 8, at least not in pure performance.
My habit is that I almost never turn my computer off unless it crashes or when I am trying to reclaim every byte of memory. Same goes with the programs I run, mainly a browser and photoshop, of course there are other utilities (like MSWord and Dreamweaver) that I run but only occasionally, so I don't think I'd be too bothered by the extra layer. Off course, I reserve the right to bitch about it later tongue

That's sweet, cus my new monitor is giving me some display problems.

I've checked other packages from other brands, they are all about the same for price/performance - So Dell it is, again.

I am going to put in the order tonight. Thanks for all your help smile

The Pro version of Win8 is probably not worth the extra $100 for the average Jo?

Where are you shopping? Win 8 Pro shows as $139 (US) on Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6832416552

That said, yeah Win 8 Pro probably doesn't have anything you need. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions

There is a door crasher deal today at dell.ca and I can get the same system (after upgrading it with GTX 660 card) for $100 less and the only difference is it ships with normal Win8.

I bought the one I originally linked to after one last minute more careful inspection. The difference.
