[SPOILERS] *Placeholder* Zakalwe plays a soldier

Heh, guess I'm overdue then, since I already got guilds. smile

If I actually had been planning stuff, I should at least have had a GP ready for when the mausoleum completed.

What do you think about upgrading horse archers to knights? It costs 103 gold, and I make 200 gpt. Boldly is researching engineering, and it might be nice to hurt him a little before he gets pikes. He has a size 13 city on the central island that should yield a fair amount of capture/raze gold.

We're up to T116.

I decided to research banking so I can get into mercantilism. (If I had nabbed the pyramids too, instead of losing them on turn order, things would be looking really good at this point.)

Ichabod is still in a golden age, and Novice started one too. He's probably about to liberalize nationalism or something, while Ichabod must be aiming for gunpowder since he has no iron. I showed a knight to Novice and as a result he seems to be rushing troops to his border city. Fine by me.

I wiped out Ichabod's naval stack in the south, trading 3 triremes for 3 unpromoted triremes and 2 galleys. My combat I triremes only get 50% attacking his unpromoted triremes, and sadly I lost all three coinflips. So I still don't have any combat II triremes. This early game naval warfare is really unsubtle... Apart from those triremes, I haven't taken any casualties against Ichabod after razing his big border city. I settled two cities in his direction in the south, and keep building up my strength so I can advance further if I see an opening.

In the middle sea, there are all told more than 20 triremes in the water, just that I can see. 5 of those are mine, but I may try to bug out of there and consolidate my navy elsewhere. My island city is a bit of a dud without trade routes, but I do have four offshore cities in the west so it's no huge loss. I'm settling a city on the copper 3S of Comoros to complete my canal network, so I'll have an easy way out there. (I also finally flipped the fort on the isthmus.)

Some screenshots, including city views, taken after ending turn. (So some cities have grown and are unmicroed; also, I'll be adopting mercantilism next turn for another specialist everywhere.)

T118.

National epic was completed last turn, and I'll now make a GP in four turns, for a golden age. Meanwhile, I'm building knights, and I just eked out engineering at the end of this turn. Various GPs have been born recently; Novice got a GG and then a GE or a GS, or maybe both. Parthenon was completed (not by the GE), and christianity was founded. Maybe the AP will be rushed? That would have been nice to have, but you can't have everything. Ichabod also got a great artist last turn, which may be bad news. Hopefully he'll use it on the front against Boldly, if he goes for a culture bomb.

In general, I'm feeling really clueless about what the others are up to, as you may tell. smile I'm just waiting for Novice to liberalize something crazy. Either way, I figure an appropriate counter-strategy is to just conquer Ichabod, so I'm still working on that. My heroic epic city is one-turning knights, and most of my other cities are on military, too. I'm very close to first place in land area now.

Any mistake is punished harshly on this tight map. Ichabod razed my size 2 city Samoa, which was moderately annoying, as it cost me a settler, missionary, longbow, and GG axe which was due to be upgraded to a maceman soon. I even spotted his attacking units - 2 maces - with my sentry chariot, but then I moved away the chariot, and before I was done with the turn I forgot about them. So I managed to move out 2 of Samoa's 4 defenders on various unimportant missions, leaving it defended by just a longbow and the GG axe. smoke I was probably just a handful of turns away from winning back its first ring tiles, making it much safer, too.

In the north, things aren't much more encouraging. Ichabod bombed his border city, stealing my northern iron. Nice move, buying him a round of knights before I could pillage the iron. Then, to add insult to injury, he popped another iron on the same turn, deeper in his own territory. I pillaged that, too, using my guerilla II units, but I don't think I can keep it disconnected. He has catapults, longbows, lots of maces, HAs, and at least 5 knights. Making any further progress against him will be tough.

I'm not the only one who is aggravated, though. If you wonder what Boldly's "hateful" post in the tech thread was about, this is it:

He had those triremes two tiles further north, blocking me out of his waters. But I forted the desert tile and moved around his stack, reinstating a blockade. That big city is his Moai city, and blockading it has a very noticeable effect on his demographics. So I can understand that he's annoyed. I'm going to retreat back into my own waters on this turn, though, as I don't really want to force a naval showdown right now.

I've got a GP coming at the end of this turn, so I guess I'll start a golden age. Then tech towards nationalism and try to build the Taj, perhaps. And build some banks. Like I said, I don't think I can advance against Ichabod at this point, so I'll just have to try and keep up in economic growth.

BTW; Novice ended his golden age in theocracy and mercantilism, so everybody has knights at this point. Ichabod and I also have engineering, and the other two are researching it. I sense a stalemate...

stalemate's are fun!!! maybe you can build a spaceship!!
Please don't go. The drones need you. They look up to you.

T124 started with a bad dice roll.

Oh well. Guess that makes us even for that failed boating attack he had on Jordan, earlier.

In other news, Ichabod cleaned out my guerilla II units (at a slight hammer deficit to him), and is now able to reconnect his iron. I believe Novice has nationalism now, but he probably doesn't have marble (Boldly built all the marble wonders that I missed, including the great library), so I guess I'll still take a shot at the Taj.

Much better rolls off Ichabod's west coast!

The outcome here wasn't really in doubt once I opened the save, with me amphibiously razing his moai city, and (eventually) capturing his island city. But I got very nice rolls, achieving both of those goals without losses! I was already "besieging" the island city, after landing a pair of knights and a chariot on the island, and killing two defending units last turn. He still had two longbows to kill though, after chopping his deer and upgrading a freshly whipped archer. Not sure what happened with his moai city, i.e. why he left it so open. I had been moving a lot of boats back and forth in the area, so he may have concluded/gambled that they were empty since I hadn't landed any more units on the island. Or maybe he forgot that my boats have three moves. But I was counting on being able to hit the island directly from the boats if I needed to, and keeping my options open instead of disembarking. Bottom line, he had just a longbow and a warrior in the city, and I could hit it with three knights and a longbow. Pretty decent odds, and then I actually won the very first knight attack at 9% odds. That let me raze the city using my longbow, and use the other two knights to attack his island city. I won all of those battles, at 60-80% odds, bringing all of my knights to 10 XP in the process. I was also able to capture two workers and a granary in the city. Very very nice overall result on this front. He now has just a single city on the west coast, so I completely control the entire western sea.

You managing to reach first place in score is symbolically impressive.
