I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

As I said a few posts above, I would like your input into my city sites. I have marked out a few but I'm not 100% sold on all of them. Anyone got any suggestions?

The desert one looks quite OK, but the other two suck rather badly.

Hmmm ... that southern strip of water looks like, what? A seven tile lake? Can you even build a lighthouse or harbor on that? If not, would it make sense to move the "C" nearest Tumil Nado maybe 1NW? I can't think of anyplace to move the others that would improve matters (though the copper site looks decent already) without dynamiting a mountain or building the city on rafts. Oh, and bear in mind that I've never actually, technically played a single game of CIV, so I may not know what I'm talking about....

The problem with almost all these cities is the lack of decent food, so they will grow far too slowly for that part of the game (and also have nothing really better than lake or very low bonus tiles so they will likely be a negative contributor to your empire).

You might consider moving 2N the city south of the 'floodplain' sign (and cancelling the planned city further north), therefore it will have 2 FP+sugar for fast grow and a few production tiles with copper+hils (unfortunatly all desert ones).
It could be a decent city (especially with enough food to grow fast enough to a significant size) instead of the 2 half-cities you were planning.

Thx for the input.

Dreylin and I were recently discussing wonders, future of game, etc and I was saying that this game is moving into the end phase. We really shouldn't be doing anything that has a payback longer than 30 or 40 turns.

I guess that cities fall into that category too. As such, I shouldn't be putting down a city that I will cottage for future commerce. I guess the type of city I do want to put down is one for food, hammers, whip and draft potential.

I have a settler coming out of FF next turn and I will have to put him somewhere - will look at a sugar, double floodplain city for lots of food.

That said, Dreylin does want me to catch the extra spice so that I can trade it to him for happy.

No. The minimum water body size for coastal city improvements is 10 tiles. But a 7 tile lake will be freshwater and as good as lighthouse coast anyway.

Desert copper is not exciting for hammers. It's only 4 hammers which is the same as a plains hill, which I've outlined elsewhere how they're inefficient. That tile converts 2 food to 4 hammers and you can do better by working a different tile (such as 2-1-0 forest) and whipping. Desert hills without resources are even worse at 2:3 foodhammer conversion.

What do people think about settling ON the copper? What will be the base city tile production (2F, 2H?) if I decide to do that?

No, the city square'll still be 2F1H1C, since the square doesn't provide 2H unimproved.
