how do you think you can get more land?

Here is the state of my state - Roma Victor!
(September 6th, 2013, 05:21)Dhalphir Wrote: how do you think you can get more land?Welcome aboard! You are hereby promoted to dedicated lurker, trusted advisor, strategos and probationary turnplayer. As this recent event-thing shows, I believe I can take some from Oxyphenbutazone. He was declared on again, by suttree this time, so I'll see what I can do. In a diplo game I'd ally with him (and some other guys on the other side of the land of the Sut) and send an expeditionary force to keep suttree from growing too big. But as it stands - I think best play is to absorb his western border cities before suttree does. If this is the kill-Oxy-war I must get in on the spoils. Before they are spoiled. And see here: Some nice land ready to be settled. In the brochure I named this "Island of green and verdant paradiseness" to encourage settlers. Kind of like when the vikings named greenland that (what were they gonna do, 'Iceland' was already taken). Settlers embarked in city of 'Chariot', next turn landfall and then a new city. City to serve as naval early warning system, and it will give me some commerce. And trade routes should be good. Name - Merkur. (Battle for Crete) The north - where 4 civs almost meet. Cities are just now starting to grow, but it is slow going. I cottaged some while happy cap was low but recently built some farms to grow some pops. Forges almost up, then I can build some stuff. Units, or wealth to fuel 100% research in my capital... I'm not guarding my workers around here. "I'm nice, and besides you don't really want to go to war over some workmen, right?" Eastern border: Tranquility and Harmony are kind of obvious targets if Oxy buckles under Suttree pressure. And could make good forward bases for my eventual punitive strike into Lolsut lands. Put a lot of info-screen screenshots in spoilers. Short version here: Civic-stuff: I run hereditary, bureau and org.rel. wetbandit is running my civics, no others have bureau. pacetyrants have rep but no org.rel. And WillLP is not hereditary. (Have still not met Kuro nor retep). Army: I have 17 praets, 6 spearmen, 5 warriors, 4 catapults and 2 chariots. Damn you suttree, should have been 3 to fit the pattern. You die next. However my power is only 4th on demos. Judging by graphs, if I give myself 100%, I say wetbandit and spacetyrant have 90%. Sisub about 50%, WillP 110% and Oxy has 115%. Suttree 150%. Demo: GNP 2nd, MFG 4th, Crop 6th. Sisub and Oxy and I suppose Kuro are all losing wars, Azza is eliminated. So I am last in crop of the playa's. Techs: Got calendar, metal casting and machinery. However not sure what to go after now. I went to LIT first. National epic is my goal, need some more GPs for a new golden age. After this...engineering, perhaps? Road movement? Then I decide between education, nationalism, or feudalism/guilds/banking. I still lack archery and HBR.

If you want to go to war, I think military tech will be critical - you will need knights.

I think regardless of what I plan, there will be war before too long.
Engineering for 3-movers is decent both defensively and offensively - quicker to concentrate troops, sort of means I need less of them. Knights are great, and the techs guilds-banking aren't a total loss economically either. And longbow defenders means my attackers will suffer more when they do attack... I noticed that both suttree and Oxy have been whipping heavily. WillLP also did a round of whipping, maybe he is jumping into the fight as well. I have enough forces nearby that I can attack Oxy as well in 4-5 turns too. I'll send a scout of some kind and see what is going on.

WB will just about make it to the fish when borders expand. And at size two I work iron mine. I think build order is lighthouse - granary, someone has <12 hours to correct me if I'm wrong... --- In other news, I've been transferring superfluous troops eastwards, you know, to ...scout. Yes. And for maneuvers. Oxy has 5 units in Harmony, his middle border city. 2 horse archers. Perhaps he is telling me that he can see my troops move, and that I can't have his cities even if suttree is invading from the east, thank you very much. Anyway my expeditionary force is 6-7 units now, some catapults, spears and 5 praets. They're still in camp far from the border, but the border will appear closer when engineering comes through.

Granary almost always first before lighthouse, particularly when your second citizen will be working a mine.

Seems Oxy decided to defend his western cities as well.
Hm. I thought he was in a do-or-die war with suttree? If this stack should wander into my lands I can beat it, but annoying. I want to take undefended cities, not fight legions of enemies. Suttree, what are you doing? I've also seen steady whipping from WillLP, perhaps Oxy is moving this stack up in response to hostility from him as well. My operation 'forge' is nearly complete, with some strategic whips. Now I can really build up some more army. I'm getting some long-overdue catapult regiments finished first, will make some macemen to wreck any axemen. Praets are just as good versus anything else, so I can build a few of them still, they only cost 45 hammers compared to maces 70.
