Good to see Amazon come through for you.

Nice pop. Shame that area can't be reached, but at least you got something for your troubles. Honestly, as awesome as popping Astro in an MP game would be, it probably wasn't worth researching Compass ahead of time for the low chance of getting it.

Query: Is it worth building the Globe on an 11-turn build? How much of a benefit are you likely to see from it? Oxford pays for itself almost immediately, but is Globe going to let you draft so many more units than you otherwise would have?

That is a good question. DV is hammer poor. It only puts out about 15 hammers. A musketman is 53 hammers. The Globe is 201 (+25% for building a building).

If my calculations are correct, once I have the Globe in DV and I am in Nationhood, A Death Valley city of size 6 will produce 24 food per turn (pic above, Corn, 4 x 3 tiles, 1 x 4 and center). A size 6 city eats 12 and needs 21 food to grow. So Death Valley at size 6 will be growing each turn. This means I can draft a unit from it each turn. I think that pays for itself.

Also, Death Valley is right near the front - no waiting for units to get to the battle zone.

I'll plan to be whipping a unit / building or two in DV and letting the overflow go into The Globe so it shouldn't take 11 turns.

Note: I expect to lose the 2 red X farms above to sooooo in the next few turns. He upped his culture in his city there and both tiles are currently at 50% Indian, 49% Greece. They should flip back once I put a Conf Academy in DV smile.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Won't a Conf Academy take a long time if you're working all the food tiles (and thus, not the hammer tiles). Though the culture from the Globe will help for sure.

I'm glad you got something from the hut! When designing this map, I did not know the rules for building ships on lakes, and I intended for that lake to be navicable. So apologies for not having an extra city site there, but at least we all know how it works for the future (work boats opened up by having a seafood resource, 20+ water tiles enables ships).

Yeah - it is another 201 hammers but I get +100% for having copper. I'll have to think about its value v a Bank (134h). If I can draft happily between size 6 and 7 without those farms, I may just skip the Conf Academy (remember, I do get +2h from it).

So ... all lurkers ... are my drafting numbers correct? Actually, I should probably just set up a dummy civ4 city and test it.

Yeah - no worries. But if I get killed and it comes down to not having iron ... I don't think I will be as easy going smile.

Your food/draft schedule looks right to me. Easier way to say it is that the city needs +11 food surplus to grow every turn (21 cost - 10 retained by granary.) +11 can be reached by +2 (city center) +4 (corn) +2 (farmed FP) +3 (3 farmed grasslands / cottaged FPs.)

thx T-Hawk ... feel better now knowing that my civ4 maths has the t-hawk stamp of approval smile.

MH still in severe money trouble. It doesn't look like he is giving it away and from discussions with Dreylin, it doesn't look like he is spending it on upgrades. Guess he is just really hurting for commerce.

DV has put 12 hammers into a 53 hammer and then whip it next round for 3 pop and 19 hammers worth of overflow into The Globe. Hmm, loss of 15 hammers worth of production, 3 population points. Gain: 19 hammers of production and 1 musket. And, hopefully, The Globe 1 turn earlier?

Big big news. Mh has signed peace with Dreylin. However, Dreylin is now at war with Athlete (the dirty double dealing NAP breaker!). Seems Athlete lost some units based on his drop in power. Dreylin's power hasn't dropped but that could be a function of the weird game graph mechanics.

Whip of Musket at DV worked perfectly, The Globe now due to finish in 6 turns. I will be turning up science turn after next and lighting off Golden Age. Plan is to research Banking, Steal Replacement Parts and research Rifling. Rifling is showing as 8 turns but that is pre-PP and pre-GA.

Lets see, Athlete should land Rifling by T119. Now for me ...
  • T113 - Oxford finishes
  • T114 - GA, Tech to 100%, Banking completes if I can get 400b per turn, up from 300b per turn at the moment (that should be possible as I pick up 80b just from Oxford)
  • T115 - Steal Replacement Parts, Start Rifling (should be about 6)
  • T121 - Rifling finished
