The RNG is an asshole. That is all.

We definitely rolled well; that's an understatement. I didn't run any simulations at the time you showed up with your chariot SOD, but that was clearly the key moment IMO. Do you think the archer attack at the beginning was out of sorts, given our situation?

From my scouting, I thought you would've had more land up north. Didn't realise at the time that we were effectively in a fight for the land between us, so I'd expected you to just expand elsewhere. I think I saw your power jump but wrote it off as you being overcautious trying to defend yourself with Archers, rather than planning to attack me with Archers.

Also, the fact that you were able to get that spearman just before I attacked with my chariot SoD... that was heartbreaking to see. I'd been watching the trade screen for metal, saw you had no metal, and then for you to pop up with a metal unit when I rolled in...

The metal placement on our side of the world was awkward. We revealed copper 11 tiles east of our capital and, as you know, there was just no damn metal anywhere. With respect to that, the location of "Your Iron" is also ridiculous (2W of your Ice City).

I just didn't see how we could reach for that copper, protect that city, all the while preventing a potential choke from your chariots with only archers.

Molach beat us to IW by a considerable margin, I really don't know why he never used his AGG Praets on either of us. I'm sure he saw that we didn't have metal, I'm guessing there are interesting things going on to his east. Of course, I think he's getting ready to have a go with us now.

Pictures from space:

Lots of nice city spots out on the Islands.

Looks like a funky version of Europe from space (squished Spain, fat Italy, Scandinavia an island, Britain attached - there's even a little Denmark).

... I've been eating too much of the popcorn.

The Persian continent certainly has some unique features. The snaky Iberian peninsula led to far more land than I ever expected.

Speaking of the islands, the most far flung western island city came out of revolt and costs 7.88 gold at size 1. yikes Island expansion might be on hold for a bit.

I'll post some pictures later, but I seem to have come to the limit of Western sea travel accessible by galleys, at least without the benefit of culture.

I'm moving settlers to fill in some spaces on the mainland. It seems like growth is not happening quickly enough for me. Currently saving gold and idling at 10% towards Calendar to generate a ton of overflow when I step on the gas. Tail is at size 18 and is building ToA, mainly because it will cash about 450 failgold. I could also finish it in 1 turn from Mad Dog if I needed the cash sooner, but then we're looking at about 170.

Aside from filling up the mainland now, I lack inspiration on how to go forward from here. Breakeven tech is at 40% and about 200 beakers/turn. We are competitive in demos, save soldier count, with all the top dogs we can see.

My question is, how the hell do I win this game?

Musings in no particular order of import

1. We have a momentary seemingly military tech advantage. No one else has Machinery as far as I can tell and it is T139. Medieval wars on a slug fest and we would need Guilds and possibly Engineering sooner to fight a Medieval conquest against a strong enemy in WLP and Molach. I could tech up to Knights and whip out 40 or so and attack Molach. I haven't planned for that, and I still need Feudalism and Guilds itself. I need to look to see how quickly I can get these.

2. There is a lot of land to fill up. This is more of an investment for the longer term. Develop the mainland and slowly settle the islands. I would tech Calendar-Aeth-Lit and then head towards Paper and Education. Oxford in Capital.

3. Someone teched Philo. Guessing that person has a gleam in their eyes for the Taj.

4. I don't really know how anyone else plans to win. Oxy is fighting and apparently winning somewhat against Suttree, taking a city last turn. He also just whipped a lot and Suttree, conversely, is not whipping. Without seeing too much, Oxy is doing a lot to help keep us Western powers in the game by taking on the top dog. Still, Suttree has a LOT of land. This makes me think I should go get some more too. With that in mind, I am bordered by two stronger powers, at least compared to Suttree.

5. I'd like to find Retep to fill out the bingo card.

6. I continue to prop up Halvgud, gave him OB. He's got 2 or 3 cities. Consider it my small part against the tyrannical LOLSUT.

7. WLP has a lot of borders to defend.

The island maintenance really discourages me and is leading me to consider more conquest.

No FP yet, as I was originally thinking of putting it in the future Moai city to lessen island maintenance. That's just going to take too long I now realize. I'm going to build it in Another One and it will be done in about 10 turns versus the 20-30 or so otherwise. That's a lot of GPT.

And weedy that I whipped the lighthouse ahead of the granary. WTF mate.

Maintenance stinks.

The end of the world. As much as I'd like to colonize out here, it's going to cost an arm and a leg.
