so if you were whipping an archer/axe/something low cost, and you put a chop into it on the same turn as whipping it, you would lose hammers.

The best way to avoid this - apart from timing your chops? Would it be to switch to another unit for the chop turn then switch back to complete the whipped unit later?

This naturally depends on the situation. Sometimes you desparately need 2 units in 2 turns and just eat the few lost hammers. However if you can you should obvivously try to avoid losing hammers and delaying chop or changing production are both potential alternatives.

Why are you whip / chopping to put more than 70 hammers into an axe in a single turn? I'd try to plan my micro better. E.g. the worker chopping should have been doing something else first or the whip should be earlier or later.

yeah that was the intent of the question - timing chops that way is obviously bad micro, my question was mainly to figure out the degree to which it might hurt me, since it happened by accident in an SP game today and I didn't record the numbers before rolling over the turn to figure out if I lost hammers, but it did seem like I did.

I did not realized there were exceptions, can you elaborate?

This is a myth.

I seem to remember that was true for Civ 3, that a city with any border expansion would not autoraze.
