You can dash backwards after you attack so its good for that. Otherwise its just good for escape and spike dodging.

A lot seems to depend on play style, and also what you are familiar with doing. Your reflexes get developed for the abilities you have, and significant changes actually make you worse for a while until you adjust. I unlocked the dragon class, for example, and found it too different to play it well.
I just don't worry about fairy challenges, mostly. They are very arbitrary -- you either have the necessary runes/abilities, or you don't. But over time you will find enough of them that you can complete to get the runes you need.
Just had my first 20K gold run. Died attempting the Tower boss. I don't think I took the right approach, will have to try some different options.

I only played through the game once, but I found the dash rune very helpful in some bossfights.

Anyone have luck with the dragon? I find that the quicker movement via jumping arcs and dashing beats out flying in most situations, even bullet hell.

I haven't really tried; I basically stick to Lich, Barb, and Paladin (Hokage if nothing viable comes up. I do have "Randomize children").
There's only four stats that matter for dragons:
- Haste
- Vampirism
- HP
- Int
So part of it's customizing your build to take advantage of it. Strength is irrelevant. I'd be tempted with 3-4 Haste Runes to give the Dragon another shot.

Finally "completed" the game for the first time, although of course there are infinite rounds of New Game+. Took exactly 200 heirs to finally beat Johannes and the Fountain -- yes, I suck at platformers.
Now all the enemies have swapped up to the next version, and I am back to having half my runs not even scraping together enough gold to purchase a single upgrade. At least I am finally finding some better equipment again -- I had not seen anything new for a LONG time as I tried to get strong enough to take on the bosses the first time. I need more attack upgrades -- needing 5 or 6 hits to kill every enemy leads to very short life spans.

Not sure that my run of 179 children was truly better. Dragons were amazing for the boss runs. I just finished getting all of the Runes prior to going after Johannes, but not sure my equipment was better than yours.
I wrecked the end bosses with an Ambilevlous Dragon (shoot fireballs while running away - only took one hit on the Fountain, 0 on Johannes).

200 deaths to clear out the first (Normal) difficulty level? I didn't think that Rogue Legacy was quite that hard. Are you trying to use a keyboard instead of a controller (?) I would certainly suggest getting a controller if at all possible, this is not a mouse and keyboard game. There's a lot of pattern recognition to this game, and it definitely helps once you've started to see some of the room layouts repeat. With that all said, at some point I guess it does come down to reflexes and practice; with more time invested, you will definitely get better.
I have a whole page on my website devoted to Rogue Legacy now, and I've done playthroughs of what I consider to be the three main difficulty levels (Normal, NG+, and NG++) with the Paladin and Archmage classes. I've also done a couple of live commentary runs that are uploaded to YouTube, and linked from the website. I'm not sure if that's helpful or not, but it might be.
My best gold run was 243k with the Paladin in NG++ difficulty. On Normal, it's almost impossible to get over 50k gold, unless you won the treasure gambling minigame or something like that. Best I've done on Normal were 46k (with the Paladin) and 42k (with the Archmage). I'm currently running the game with the laughably overpowered Barbarian class, and I should be able to defeat Normal in under a dozen deaths. The class is really strong, since health is the most important stat in the game. Best piece of advice for anyone struggling is probably to build more health.

Well, I have 273 deaths while trying to get the equipment achievement (last one :D) so long as we are comparing numbers.
