After a massive 2 year+ burnout break from all things civ, I finally return. Play a couple regular games, then head right back to Realms Beyond for something different. Arrive to find I've seemingly missed the entire BTS era with no open games, as somewhat expected. Finally a game shows up - Adventure 39. Deity? . Actually tired it but quit when my somewhat rushed first settler couldn't find any free land! But this isn't 39, it's

Adventure 40 - The Illuminati

Having missed most of the BTS era, I've never really played around with Spies. Hence, I foresee much tech stealing.
Starting game plan is to acquire the Great Wall for a Great Spy, acquire Pyramids for Representation powered spy specialists, and go forth and steal everything in sight. All the while looking for Praetorian opportunities.

I'm a little curious about why you spent so much effort on keeping civs out of emancipation. Caste system doesn't apply to spies, so I'm not sure why you would want to stay in it. Also, emancipation might have helped the tech rate, which you commented was slower than you would have liked. Did you simply have more EPs than you could spend, or is there something I'm missing?

I'm a little curious about why you spent so much effort on keeping civs out of emancipation. Caste system doesn't apply to spies, so I'm not sure why

Short answer - because I could. I was also tired of every game ending up with everyone in Emancipation.

It wasn't really much effort. Surplus EPs and Spies standing around wait for something to do. It only cost ~200-300 EPs each time so less than 2 turns of EP production was spent on this. Also despite only 75% odds on the mission succeeding, I never had a failure. In fact, I only had one spy mission fail the whole game - during my operation Spanish famine one spy failed to destroy its assigned farm.

End game espionage. Rather large surplus.



As for Emancipation helping the tech rate, simply revolting from Caste to Emancipation drops my research from 556 to 544. I had 11 cottages total in my lands with only 2 not already at town status. 4 of them from captured Indian lands. No plans to build more.

I was staying in Caste/State Property simply due to all the Workshops and Watermills I had. Production for the space race backup plan. Switching all production to building research would've boosted beakers to 1606/turn. More than sufficient to tech ahead of the AIs and win the race.

Dropping out of Caste/State Property into Emancipation/Free Market to bring online some corporations was thought about. I had a GE cooling his heels while I ran max Merchants in Rome trying to spit out a GM. Missed first one at 35% odds, second chance at 56% was one turn away when the diplo win came in. With Sushi and Mining available I would've likely revolted and went space race that way. Losing the Caste/State Property production bonus was only a drop from 1050 to 969 empire wide production - pre Corporate effects.
