If you want to get into some multiplayer, best bet is to lurk around the General and PBEM/Pitboss forums to see if people need replacement players, or if a new game is starting up - which it actually is at the moment, so if you want to jump into a newbie-oriented PBEM game, head on oover and put your name down!

I posted in the Pitboss signup thread so let me post here as well and introduce myself! I'm another person who found my way here from stumbling across the writeups on Sulla's website. I used to play a bunch of succession games over at CivFanatics, mostly with some kind of strange condition attached to them. After a couple of years, I had the urge to play Civ4 again but the CivFanatics succession game forum seems to be pretty dead these days. Maybe I will start another game here if peope are interested. I lurked the Multiplayer games here for a while and they looked like fun so I thought I would sign up and try to join one. I can usually win on Emperor in SP, I don't know how well that will translate to MP. Nice to meet all of you.

That's a perfect fit for us! At least theoretically - our SG subforum goes in fits and starts. But pretty much the only games that get off the ground are games with a variant attached.

Hey, I want to check in here before I just throw up a thread and take up space: I want to check interest for another PBEM "greens" or "not vets" game. I know one started a few months ago so I might be a little too late, but if there are a few people interested who didn't get in that game, shout out.

The new PBEM 54 game is for non-expert players, one of whom (Jowy) recently suffered a computer failure. You may want to inquire in his thread if he'd like a dedicated lurker or replacement.
