RB Pitboss #2 [SPOILERS] - Speaker and Sullla

This really is producing a wealth of info about reading demographics and worker micro. Been catching regular updates of this thread and it's giving me the pleasant brain ache from learning. smile

Thanks very much!

Really interested to see that surge kick in, can see it already starting. Very keen to see how it compares to other starting play.

Now for some more lurking!

My favorite thing about This team's play style is how they squeeze every last drop of productivity out of every element in every game. Even tidbits of seemingly irrelevant data are stored and referred to for maximum benefit and absolutely nothing is taken for granted.

Do I take this to mean that other teams are not doing this level of analysis and micromanagement? shhh

Speaker, Dantski's warrior disappeared from view! That means he moved it either south or (more likely) southeast. There is no threat to our capital at all. As a result, I went ahead and ended our turn. No hurry at all in moving Chamberlain next turn now.

Thanks for the comments from the lurkers! thumbsup I hope we can live up to your expectations. Comparing starting strategies is indeed one of the most entertaining things about this game, not least because openings are so very important.

With the Demographics, it's pretty easy to work backwards and figure out what was going on each turn, even for cities where you have no visibility at all. However, once those teams found their second city, it basically becomes impossible to tell what tiles they are working. So enjoy it while it lasts! With just the capitals, however, you can work backwards and figure out just about everything.

I hope you enjoy watching our surge tactic play out. Even something as minor as farming in 3t (with two workers) as opposed to 5t (with one worker) makes a major difference. The first part of our surge is already in play: the first worker took 15t to build, the second one took 6t. Wow, what a difference! (And it would have taken 8t with a non-Fast Worker. Yay, India!) But the real boost comes when we build our first settler in a mere 4t, while growing to size 2 in the process! jiveFor comparison, Jowy/Yaz would take 15t to build a settler at their current pace if they don't do any slaving or chopping. Yep, that makes a difference!

Generally speaking, you want to avoid wasting shields on building warriors before workers in the extreme early game. Of course, going without military is a big risk, which is why Speaker and I acknowledged that our opening was a gambit. We could have been the ones eliminated! But since we weren't, our civ is developing really nicely. I can't wait to see where we go from here.

Good news all around. Shall we now get in touch with Dantski and see if we can formalize a NAP agreement with him? Then with both borders secure, we can feel free to expand to our heart's content, as long as the Barbarians don't try anything funny.

Oh, by the way...wtf was Dantski doing with that warrior? lol

the original comment said "Sulla" instead of "This team" and had references to his FF writeups. It was a comment about his general play style across all games. I changed it to "This team" and removed the references to other games because I didn't want you to feel left out only because I haven't made it to your writeups yet. alright

This explanation was only to remove any doubt of any spoilers, and I shall now ban myself from this pitboss game bang

I was just giving you a hard time. Don't leave on my account. I fully recognize that Sullla is the rockstar here, but I am happy to play second fiddle (get it? Music jokes!). smile

All right, we'll try this with Dantski about securing an NAP. I have not sent the following message as yet:

Quote:Greetings once more, Dantski!

Speaker and I have seen your warrior poking around the outskirts of Gettysburg of late. I hope you've found us to be accomodating hosts, and enjoyed your stay in the local neighborhood thus far. We saw that you had the opportunity to make some aggressive moves towards our capital and chose not to take them, and we're very appreciative of that fact. On our end, it has definitely helped build support for closer cooperation with your Malinese people to the south.

As such, we thought we'd sound you out on the prospect of some kind of early game Non-Aggression Pact [NAP], so that we can both avoid having to engage in a destructive military buildup. We'd rather be building Fast Workers, and you'd probably rather be building Imperialistic settlers, right? What would you say to an NAP designed to last until 1000BC, Turn 75? That's long enough to get past the early axeman/chariot rush period, but not so long that it shackles either of us into a permanent union should things go sour later on. I think we'd all like to avoid a situation like the one in RBPitboss #1, where those guys are practically married to their alliance partners...

In parting, can we ask that if you do want to be aggressive early on, that you send any of your skirmishers to go harass Nakor and not us? Pretty please? :p Speaker says he could probably stop early skirmishers if he had to, but we think it would be best for both of us if we stay friends for a while. Not trying to suggest anything here, but if you want to get frisky, maybe go pick on the new guys, eh? ;)

Hope to hear back from you soon! Feel free to counter-offer our proposal as you see fit.

The Killer Angels

The first two paragraphs are standard stuff, just greetings and outlining our NAP proposal, which is of course the same one we offered Jowy. With the last one, I'm trying to do a couple of things:

- Push Dantski into possible early conflict with his other neighbor.
- Let him know that we're ready to stop an early choke ourselves.
- Approach the whole thing humorously so that we have deniability of the whole situation.

I really don't care if Dantski gets involved with Nakor, although it would obviously be great for us. The big here is to keep talking, act playful, and generally set up a positive working relationship. In games like this, most people (being nice guys and gals at heart) don't want to attack those who have been friendly to them. You can often get people to remain at peace, even in situations where they really, REALLY should be going to war, just because of their guilty conscious. Put another way, it's easy to attack the team that never writes back to you and sits off by themselves. Much harder to think badly of the people who are in constant communication.

I also think it's important to slip in the skirmisher reference, where we effectively say "yeah, we know you have skirmishers. Don't come after us, you're not going to succeed." That's 50% bluff and 50% truth there. We do have copper, and axes can fight skirmishers, but it's a brutal war of attrition for both sides. Not what either of us should be doing...

Off to play some soccer, will check back here in a couple of hours. [Image: smile.gif]

As always, you are a master of diplomacy, Sullla. Thankfully he's not Protective. Protective Skirmishers are a pain to deal with, since they have immediate access to the Cover or Shock promotion with just a barracks via the free Drill I. Really, the best defense against Skirmishers, aside from the pen, are Swordsmen, but they cost 1.6x and require us to research an expensive tech to build.

I happened to log on to check out T23 just as Whosit was ending the turn. So I played our turn 24. Workers both farmed, which will finish next turn. I moved the warrior NW, next to the capital.

Screenshot of the demographics is in the folder.
