Due to rego's double move, that round was costlier then anticipated. For the official tally of losses so far:
My Losses 22
Catapult 6 (300)
War Elephant 10 (600)
Maceman 1 (70)
Horse Archer 5 (250)
Total Hammers 1220 + 2 cities
Rego's losses
War Elephant 2 (120)
Knight 2 (180)
Catapult 4 (200)
Maceman 1 (70)
Total Hammers 570
The worst of the one sided losses should now be over, I expect to lose 1 more city SS before I can turn this war around. Based upon the overwhelming force that are arrayed against my eastern flank there was no doubt that I would lose at least 2 cities and probably 3.
As for why defend agasinst overwhelming force that is simple. I need to buy time to get my reinfocements in place most of the production cities are far away and it is taking up to 8 turns to move units to the eastern front. The entire eastern front was only defended by war elephants, horse archers and catapults (none of which get a defensive bonus) and a single quechua. If I withdrew without serious resistance in the first city that just meant he would reach my next city a couple of turns faster and I would be faced with the same dilemma. I would have to give up about 5 cities if I withdrew all the way back until I could get enough reinforcements to hold a city against his attack. If I end up losing 5 cities anyway then I will admit that I was wrong in my strategy.
The real question from my perspective was whether to attack with catapults and horse archers or to simply stack them all in RR. Either way I would lose the city but by stacking defensively I would kill more of rego's troops but wound less. I chose the wound more and kill less (a tactic I would not normally do) because I think it might slow him down more. I am hoping the delay to heal his troops buys me more time to get the reinforcements in place.
