I suggest Portugal as a nice starter country. You've got options for expanding into northern Africa, colonizing the new world or Africa, or even striking into castille if you feel adventuresome (but get good allies!)

Make sure you pick a mid-large size European country to learn with, as Pin said Porchuggle is good, France, England, Castille, Austria or Ottomans are all good to learn on as well.

Question: read a guide first or figure it out on my own?

Either a) I should not have finished the Reconquista before my truce with Granada expired, or b) I should not have blown all my points on bringing my stability up. Also, historically I don't think it was quite this hard to reconvert Andalusia to Catholicism.

Never break truces, it's not worth it. As for stability, I tend not to worry about it as long as it's not negative, admin points are far better spent elsewhere.

Did you take any religious ideas/advisors? IIRC it's impossible to convert Sunnis until either the Reformation (for counter-reformation decisions giving +conversion) or hiring a +conversion advisor, or with the religious ideas.

Yeah, breaking truces will instantly give you a hit to stability and war weariness. There were a couple of strats in 1.5 where some countries wanted to do that anyway in order to start expanding out of the gate, but most of the time it's better to wait until the 5 years are up.

Thanks, I actually re-started a couple of times until I got the Missionary boosting adviser, and did some other stuff until the treaty expired. I've killed just about every able bodied man in Spain but Grenada (can convert 2 of the 3 states) is mine, and Aragorn is down to one province under siege hammer.

Uh...speaking of which, how do you re-grow Manpower?

Time is really the only way. Build military buildings to help increase your max manpower (and therefore your rate of monthly increase). But this is one of the obstacles against a player just being able to war all the time.

This is also how mercs can shine as they don't dip into your manpower. But of course they cost a lot more. There's a bit of a dance in balancing homegrown troops and conscripted mercs, to keep both your manpower and cash in check. Especially if you always war.
