I think REM's knowledge about the game mechanic is pretty good. The issue is that he's coming into the game with the wrong mentality. He is already making plans what he is going to do 100 turns in the future. A good advice for new players (myself included) I have heard is to play the map in front of you and make your strategy based on that instead of forcing a certain strategy onto the map.
But then again what do I know? I would love to see someone actually pull off a good 'phract rush.
IMO a major mistake of his is saying that a turn X settler is good based on when he'd normally expect a settler, when this map has abnormally fast starts.

I got curious and had to find the relevant post and my first reaction was that T31 is surely still OK here... But then realized that this is quick speed and not normal. Oh well, no reason to judge REM for that this early. At least whenever I post micro thoughts at T0 they are very likely getting outdated already within the first couple of turns. PS. Had to laugh at Commodore's bear...
Ah, a normal speed PBEM. *twiddles thumbs*.

REM has no copper hooked on turn 50? 2 axes from Jowy or 2 skirms from Bob could ruin his game permanently. I think he really need a settler out now to at least be ready to settle on the copper if necessary.
Yeah, although really it's third-ring capital borders, so fine if he just wants to hook it. But right there below it is EGYPT, yow...
