TheHumanHydra Falls Behind [Spoilers]

I came back to it later and got it to work; thanks, though (what you suggested was the case for one of them, but not the other huh).

Here's an updated map; this should be almost all we need for dotmapping (no sign of the animals this turn):

And here's an updated sandbox save in case anyone feels like taking a look (don't feel like you have to though):

In playing around a little I found I had done some of my paper micro from before wrong and couldn't get the settler out eot19 with my intended tile configuration. I changed it around and found I still could get it out eot19 (with exact hammers again!) by sacrificing food in-the-box. So now I intend to go:

t14 Finish grass hill mine, move work boat; food 9/16; warrior 5/10 (work deer and grass hill mine)
t15 Finish fishing boats, move worker to grass forest 1E of cap; food 17/16, grow to size 3; warrior 7/10 (work deer and fish)
t16 Chop 1t; food 8/17; warrior 12/10 (work deer, fish, and grass hill mine)
t17 Chop 2t; settler 17/65 (work tiles as above for 7 food, [5 + 2 overflow] x 1.5 = 10 hammers)
t18 Finish chop; settler 51/65 (work tiles as above for 7 food, [5 + 13 chop] x 1.5 = 27 hammers)
t19 Move worker ?; settler 65/65 (work tiles as above for 7 food, 5 x 1.5 = 7 hammers)

I think the settler should go to Fintourist's spot. Unfortunately, The Wheel would come in a turn too late to make it a one-turn move, so the hypothetical city would be founded t22. More updates as I figure more stuff out.

Er, I think I gave you the wrong save. Here's another one:

I did several hours of sandboxing tonight, but besides giving me a better 'feel for' things, I'm not sure how much closer I am to figuring out what I want to do. It's very difficult for me to compare strategies when the possibilities are so open-ended, even with the same second (or third!) city-site. I'm hoping the information provided by Bronze Working in two turns will provide some insight with regard to the dotmap and that that will provide some direction on the ground. At least I (think I) know what I'm doing till then.

thumbsup That's what makes civ so nice! I usually approach this problem by choosing one of the variations (the one that I consider best at that time) as the baseline and then compare all other tries with that until I find something better (or something that I think could be better with some improvements). It seems to me that you did it similarly and if you know how to play the next 5 turns the goal has been achieved (for now)!

Typically one needs to sim several extra turns into future before one really can compare openings, which makes it difficult and also a lot of work if one is thorough. But if one enjoys planning then it's no problem crazyeye

This is my gut feeling - cities 2 and 4 will need border pops, so I'd consider a monument in 2 (but a library could be better) I'm not sure what order I'd settle the blue cities in, but their positioning feels pretty good to me.

Do you know what worker techs you need and when you'll have them? Can you slip in a religion run around them? In a game this small you'd have a good chance and that would save some of the border pop worries... Does anyone start with Mysticism? Chopping isn't that great on quick so delaying Maths should be fine. Putting off Pottery/Currency/Alphabet on the other hand could be a problem.

Commodore does start with Mysticism, but then, he's got so much else he needs to research on account of that. I'd say a religion run is very possible. There's a lot of flex with regard to techs after BW. I may want Wheel for micro, and I'll need AH for the pigs city, but I was already playing around with an early Mysticism for monuments in my sims.

My thoughts around dotmapping had been very similar to yours (and thanks for doing that), OH; your cities 1 and 2 were what I did most of my sims with (I also tried in between the pigs and wheat, because I'm stupid and wanted food even though it screwed up most potential dotmaps). I wasn't quite sure what to do in the area of 3 because of the need to either pop borders or screw up other cities' ideal locations. I may also want a city 3E of 1, as I believe we've talked about before.

Now, I actually had a micro-path worked out that flows very nicely with the above, though I'm not sure if it's actually good micro or just 'feel good' micro. I'll try and run through it again tonight, maybe try and integrate religion, and post the results. Also we should be discovering BW at eot tonight (I played a second turn last night), which might provide some last-minute insight too.

Thanks for the encouragement. thumbsup I guess I should look on the bright side; I do know what I'm doing through t19 or so. Sadly, though, I don't enjoy the planning that much, so this is more of 'work' for me to get to the fun part of the game! Hopefully it'll pay off with a reasonably strong position for the 'fun part'!

Yeah, e.g. participating in any mid-game/late-game wars is much more enjoyable if the start has been good enough, so that one has active options available and it's not just about turtling.

Maybe I should've given you crappier land so you won't be overwhelmed by choices. mischief

Naw, I've actually found my interest in a game of Civ (SP or MP) as a player directly correlates with the lushness of the map. Ya did good.

Also can't complain about this copper placement:

Also, #winning (wink). To celebrate this auspicious moment, the demos:

Strange how I'm exactly one point off the leader in every category.

I'm the second person to size 3 (the other person is not Commodore).

Scout is now wandering aimlessly in the north.
