I believe you get the culture when you hit end turn in a PBEM.

Thank you for the info.
Cornflakes' warrior left my vision, and the barb warrior is healing up before attacking me.
My scout killed a lion without losing any HP. He has Woodsman I now.

Here's where I want to expand:
But I won't. I ran some tests for a 5th city plant to this area, but the maintenance cost is too much. It's good land, I hope it will still be there when I can afford to take it.
Anyway I've been sandboxing a lot and I know what to do till around T70 or so, but I won't spell it out because the game isn't played in a vacuum: I will have to adapt to what happens and there will be changes to the plan.
Everything's looking good. We're still behind in GNP even after improving the silver, but it's no biggie. I'll take #1 in food/production over GNP anyday
REM will be the last one to three cities, once he eventually gets there.
Our barbarian buddy does not take kindly to scouts poking around in his little corner of the world.

Took a peek at REM's capital:
Two cottages already, one's been worked for 13 turns. He hasn't revolted to Slavery yet. In fact I don't think he even has BW, there is no BW bump in his power graph.
But at the same time, he's roading south. Is he just roading to a random direction, hoping that the copper happens to be there?
Well, the sane explanation is that he hasn't seen my third city plant yet and wants to settle there next :P
Yeah I did it, I killed his scout. I want to deny him map knowledge of our lands. There's only one reason anyone picks the Byzantines.

I'll have to chop an axe, not ballsy enough to risk the city on a 50% flip. Granary won't be built in time for the next growth.

Scout Killer attacked:
Ouch. This is why I play it safe when it comes to barbs. My back-up had 84% odds and he killed the barb. We lost one C1 warrior but got a new one.
What's most important is that copper is safe and next city plant isn't delayed!
The other barb disappeared and hasn't been seen in 2 turns. Chop is coming in next turn, and it'll go towards a granary. If the barb does reappear before I have more units out, I'll whip the city for an axe.
It's for the best that I don't have an axe out while I could still go stop REM from connecting his copper. It might have been too tempting!

Founded my 4th city! Retep also found his 4th this turn.
I also did my first clear mistake this game. I didn't pay attention to Fall In's tile management when it grew. I was supposed to work a 2 food grassland forest tile to grow it to size 4 ASAP, which is when I'll switch to a settler and whip it back to 2. But the grassland forest 2N 1E was owned by 399 Opts, so the governor worked the next best tile which was a plains forest. Growth and my fifth city plant were delayed by 2 turns
EDIT: Have some demos!

Thanks. Always cool to hear that people are still reading.
I let Fall In work the ivory tile for one turn to get to 40+/100 hammers a turn earlier than expected. Death Dot didn't lose much as it had other improved tiles to work. Now my fifth city is only one turn behind schedule.
Defense is low, we have 3 warriors and soon 5 cities. 399 Opts has a near-built axe but I started a worker when it grew to size 4. I can whip axes from any city if needed.
Anyway the reason for low axe count is because I'll be connecting horses soon and I'd rather have war chariots than axes. Oh, and also because I've been growing on granaries and libraries rather than military units.
