[Spoilers] When Commodore is 64

Okay, while we twiddle our thumbs for the map, I'm going to recommend a movie...

Edge of Tomorrow

Okay, okay, I know, it's a terrible, awful name. I just read it up there and I'm already forgetting it. This was probably the worst-marketed movie to come out in a long, long time, and the name for sure was part of it. My wife and I have been laughing about it all week. The movie's name should have been "Groundhog Day Meets Independence Day And Tom Cruise Dies A Lot In Hilarious Ways". Which, admittedly, is a bit long for a marque but what are you going to do?

Seriously though, folks, it's a great movie, adapted from a good Japanese light novel with the lovely name of "All You Need Is Kill". Terrific action, humor, and it is not a sequel, prequel, or reboot (okay, it's an adaptation, but in this benighted era that's as close to "original Sci-Fi movie" as we're going to get).

Edge of tomorrow is the only action movie I have liked for reasons other that explosions.
Surprise! Turns out I'm a girl!

Yes...but the explosions were also excellent.

I'll admit, having Cruise in it was initially a turn off for me, but he wasn't particularly obnoxious and it was an enjoyable movie after all was said and done. Him dying many, many times in fairly amusing ways didn't hurt either. But the trailers were just terrible at expressing what the movie turned out to be about, iirc. If you haven't seen it it's worth the time to watch it. Can't comment on the price.

I only went and saw it because a bench of old college friends wanted to. Ended up pleasantly surprised, it was a fun movie. Although the ending felt a bit too Hollywood sappy for me.

Edge of Tomorrow is awesome, as are the Herriot books. smile

If we're reccing, anyone seen Predestination?
Also horribly marketed, I would never have seen it normally - to watch the trailers it just looks like a bog-standard film, with a secret organization of "Agents" trained to prevent crime, some sort of prophecy/destined agent turns up, blah blah blah. Went and saw it...holy fuck. Its the only film I've sat in the theatre for a full ten minutes afterwards, just processing the mindfuck. Went home and was useless to everyone all night as I just kept tripping over it.
Also an adaptation, apparently, based on a short story. Best time travel film in a long time, IMO.

Okay, continuing my vaguely bloglike postings on movies, my wife and I finally saw this one (hey, man, my son was born early on its release date):
Guardians of the Galaxy

I'm not going to waste my breath praising this thing, I'm posting on an internet forum where a bunch of super nerds play video games and report them. Obviously, this is up your alley (if you claim it isn't, go back to your $20 craft beer, you worthless hipster). This is up my alley. This is up my wife's alley, because she's also a huge nerd coauthoring fantasy novels with me. But...

How the hell was this 2014's biggest film?

It was just...so...weird, man, with uneven geeky side trips and one-offs and whatever the hell Benicio Del Toro was doing:

This...is not a mainstream movie, this is a stoner D&D nerd's tequila-infused wet dream. How did it get so huge?

When I first saw the trailer for it before the release I brushed it off and completely forgot about it. A long time later I got around to seeing it and really liked it. I guess the answer to how it got so huge is that it was actually a good movie. It overcame a pretty bad trailer (IMO) and I ended up enjoying it.
